“You do not know how charming Jacob Zuma is,” Helen Zille’s Surprising Revelation

Helen Zille’s remark, “You do not know how charming Jacob Zuma is,” offers a reminder that politics is rarely as simple as public reputations suggest. Speaking about her personal encounters with the former South African president, Zille described a side of Zuma that many people may never have experienced: warmth, courtesy and an ability to connect with people.

She recalled that Zuma once taught her how to waltz after telling her he had taken dance lessons. More significantly, she said he contacted her when she faced intense criticism over her 2017 comments on the legacy of colonialism. According to Zille, he told her that the treatment she was receiving was wrong.

Her account is striking because it separates personal charm from political performance. Zille has also described Zuma as the country’s worst democratic president, despite acknowledging his kindness towards her. The distinction matters. A politician can be gracious in private, persuasive in conversation and considerate towards an individual without necessarily being effective, ethical or successful in public office.

Indeed, South Africa’s experience under Zuma was marked by serious controversy, including state capture and the weakening of public institutions. Those concerns cannot be brushed aside because someone remembers him as personable. Equally, acknowledging a person’s positive qualities does not require endorsing their decisions or overlooking the harm associated with their leadership.

Perhaps the most interesting lesson in Zille’s statement is that political opponents are still human beings, capable of unexpected generosity and complexity. Public life encourages people to reduce one another to party labels, slogans and scandals. Personal encounters can challenge those assumptions, even if they do not change the historical record.

Zuma’s charm, as Zille describes it, may explain why he has maintained personal connections and political loyalty among many supporters. But charm is not a substitute for accountability. Leadership must ultimately be judged by decisions, institutions strengthened or damaged, and the consequences citizens live with.

Zille’s observation is therefore less a defence of Zuma than a reminder: people can possess appealing personal qualities while leaving a deeply contested political legacy. Both truths can exist at once, at least personally.
