Rwanda Open: Rugumayo’s run ends as Uganda sends four into the weekend

The Rwanda Open has offered a revealing examination of Uganda’s professional golfers, with four players progressing to the final two rounds while Ronald Rugumayo’s campaign came to an end after 36 holes.

Rugumayo arrived in Kigali on the back of three consecutive tournament victories, carrying the confidence and expectations that naturally accompany such a run. But the Rwanda Open presented a markedly different challenge, and after two rounds at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, the Ugandan found himself outside the weekend field.

He opened with an encouraging four-under 68, putting himself in a strong position after the first round. However, a second-round 73 took him to three-under 141, which was not enough to survive the cut.

The 68 demonstrated that he could immediately find a scoring rhythm on the Kigali layout. The 73, however, showed how quickly the advantage can disappear when the second round does not produce the same level of scoring. His tournament ultimately came down to the difference between those two rounds.

Kigali Golf Resort & Villas is a par-72 championship course measuring 6,595 metres. The course features elevation changes, strategic hazards and varying approach angles, while the back nine introduces several lakeside holes where water adds another layer of risk.

That combination places a premium on precision and course management rather than simply attacking every scoring opportunity.

Rugumayo’s 141 after round two left him outside the players continuing into the weekend. It makes his Rwanda Open an interesting contrast to the form that brought him to Kigali.

Three successive titles had created considerable momentum around his game, but this tournament has demonstrated that maintaining that momentum over a different course and against a field featuring a large number of Sunshine Tour professionals is another challenge altogether.

With Rugumayo out, Willy Deus Kitata is among the Ugandans carrying the country’s challenge into the final two rounds. Kitata produced two steady rounds of 71 and 69 to finish at four-under-par 140, tying him with Grace Kasango as the leading Ugandan players through the first two rounds.

The progression from 71 to 69 is significant. Rather than losing ground after a modest opening round, Kitata improved by two shots in the second round to secure his place beyond the cut. His 69 also leaves him only four shots behind the leading group of Ugandan players and gives him a platform from which to attack the final 36 holes.

Grace Kasango has produced almost the same scoring pattern. Kasango also sits at four-under-par 140, with rounds of 71 and 69. The identical scoreline means Kasango and Kitata enter the final two rounds on the same aggregate and with an equal opportunity to improve their positions.

For both players, the second-round 69 was crucial. In a tournament where the leaderboard is tightly compressed through the middle of the field, gaining a couple of shots can make the difference between continuing into the weekend and watching from outside the ropes.

Abraham Ainamani and David Kamulindwa also secured places in the weekend field, both finishing on three-under-par 141. Ainamani carded 71 and 70, while Kamulindwa followed the same scoring pattern with 71 and 70.

Their performances were less explosive than some of the scores at the top of the leaderboard, but their consistency proved valuable.

Both players avoided a major setback across the opening 36 holes and improved slightly in the second round. At three-under, they remain within a reasonable distance of the players immediately ahead of them, although the gap to the tournament leaders is substantial.

For Phillip Kasozi, the difference between making and missing the cut was particularly small. Kasozi finished at one-under-par 143, following a 72 with a 71. His two rounds were relatively steady, but the final aggregate was not enough to extend his tournament into the weekend.

The same can be said of Andrew Odoh and Marvin Kibirige, who both finished on 143 after rounds of 73 and 70. The numbers underline the fine margins involved. A handful of shots separated several Ugandan players from the weekend field.

The scale of the challenge awaiting Uganda’s four remaining players is clear from the top: Joe Sullivan leads at 15-under after rounds of 69 and an exceptional 60. Estiaan Conradie is second at 14-under, while Kyle De Beer and Travis Procter are tied on 13-under.

That means the Ugandan quartet will need substantial movement over the final two rounds if they are to climb into the leading positions. For Kitata, Kasango, Ainamani and Kamulindwa, the final 36 holes provide an opportunity to turn solid opening performances into stronger overall finishes and gain further experience on a course that demands careful management.

The Round 3 draw places Kitata and Kasango among the groups going out earlier in the day, while the leading players occupy the later tee times.

Rugumayo’s exit will naturally attract the most attention because of the form he brought into the tournament. Three straight titles had made him one of the most talked-about Ugandan golfers heading into Kigali, and his opening 68 appeared to suggest that the winning momentum could continue. Instead, the 73 in round two ended his campaign.

The result illustrates one of golf’s most unforgiving realities: recent success does not guarantee the next cut. Every tournament starts again, every course presents different demands, and every round creates a new test.

For Rugumayo, the Rwanda Open therefore becomes less about the disappointment of missing the weekend and more about the contrast between two very different rounds — a 68 that put him in position and a 73 that took him out of it.

For Uganda as a whole, however, the tournament continues. Four professionals remain in the field, led jointly by Kitata and Kasango at four-under, with Ainamani and Kamulindwa one shot further back.

The final two rounds will now determine whether Uganda can turn that surviving quartet into a strong finish in Kigali.
