Boxing fans are set for an action-packed evening as about 80 boxers from across the country converge at the Okakarara Trade Fair Hall on Saturday for the Eben Tjivande Kahimise Annual Boxing Bonanza.
Kahimise was regarded as one of the entertaining amateur boxers during the height of apartheid in Windhoek’s Old Location. The event, which starts at 17h00, will feature a series of bouts as boxers battle for honours while showcasing their skills before the Okakarara crowd.
The tournament is organised in memory of Eben Tjivande Kahimise, whose family has taken a leading role in supporting the event and boxing development. One of the organisers, Edward Chris Kangoronduezu of Chris Number One Boxing and Fitness Academy, said the event began four years ago after Kahimise’s death.
“This is the remembrance of Eben Kahimise. He passed on 21 October, and the family came together to remember him. This is to continue his legacy. The family is the main sponsor. They are putting a lot into this development programme,” he said. Kangoronduezu said the event has grown significantly since its inception, with the number of bouts increasing as more boxing clubs joined the tournament.
“The aim is to develop the sport of boxing. Every boxer must have a chance. We started with 15 bouts, then increased it.”
Participating clubs include Opuwo Boxing Club, LLU Boxing Club, Namibia Defence Force Boxing Club, Otjinene Boxing Club, New Ombili Boxing, VH Boxing Club from Otjiwarongo, Real Camouflage from Grootfontein, Morning Stars from Grootfontein, and Chris Number One Boxing Academy.
The event is also listed on the Namibia Sports Commission calendar, further highlighting its growing importance on the local boxing circuit.
Kangoronduezu said the tournament will also serve as an important platform for boxers hoping to make the national team for the upcoming Region 5 competition in Mozambique.
“Last year with Region 5 in Swakopmund, this year they are going to Mozambique. Final selection of boxers will be at the event,” he said.
The tournament is sanctioned by the Otjozondjupa Boxing Federation through the Ministry of Youth and Sport, giving it official recognition within the region’s boxing calendar.
Organisers are encouraging members of the public to attend and support the boxers, with the entrance fee set at an affordable N$10.
The event is expected to attract boxing supporters from Okakarara and surrounding areas, with organisers calling on fans to “Come One, Come All” for what promises to be a lively night of boxing.
The boxing bonanza will run from 17h00 until late at the Okakarara Trade Fair Hall.
