“Next Big Thing” – Jacob ‘Messi’ Serman Makes DDC Waves After Joining Pirates From Chiefs

At just 14 years old, Jacob Serman is already making waves across Gauteng football — and the young attacker has taken his biggest step yet, training with reigning DStv Diski Challenge champions Orlando Pirates. Nicknamed “Messi” for his natural flair and technical ability, the prodigy has come a long way in a short time, and his progress is turning heads.

Serman joined the Buccaneers directly from arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs — a move that has caught the attention of fans on both sides of the Soweto divide. Last season, he plied his trade for Pirates in the RCLFA Premier League, South Africa’s fifth tier, where he showcased the kind of talent that earned him his famous nickname. Now, he is rubbing shoulders with the club’s next generation of stars as he trains with the DStv Diski Challenge squad, edging ever closer to a higher level of competition.

The jump from youth and lower-league football to the DDC is a significant milestone, but those who have watched him play believe he has the ability to make the transition. Still only 14, he has plenty of time on his side, yet his rapid rise suggests he is ready to test himself against the country’s best young talent sooner rather than later. For Pirates supporters, the story carries extra excitement: not only is one of their brightest prospects advancing fast, but he was also lured away from their biggest rivals. As he continues to impress in training, the message is clear: Jacob Serman is knocking — and the door is beginning to open.
