Martínez apologises after United boardroom row

The Argentine defender’s outburst over recruitment laid bare the tensions simmering beneath Old Trafford’s surface

Lisandro Martínez yesterday issued a formal apology to Manchester United’s leadership after his public criticism of the club’s recruitment strategy triggered a significant internal dispute, following United’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

The Argentine centre-back, nicknamed “The Butcher” for his combative style, directed his frustration at the club’s hierarchy after Tuesday’s loss, questioning publicly whether head coach Michael Carrick had been given adequate resources to assemble a squad capable of competing on European nights at the level United aspires to reach.

The defeat, which saw goals from Pablo Barrios and Ademola Lookman condemn the English side to a chastening result, appeared to be the breaking point for Martínez. His subsequent remarks cut to the core of a debate that has followed the club for some time — whether those making recruitment decisions are equipping the manager to succeed.

The comments divided opinion sharply. Some supporters welcomed the defender’s candour, arguing that someone needed to say what many felt. Others were less sympathetic, questioning whether airing internal grievances through the media served anyone well.

Former United captain Roy Keane was unsparing in his assessment, describing the situation at the club as a “circus”. Wayne Rooney also reportedly weighed in, arguing that concerns of this nature belong in the boardroom, not the back pages.

With the controversy deepening, Martínez met Carrick, technical director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada at the club’s Carrington training ground on Thursday to address the fallout directly.

The meeting produced results. Shortly afterwards, Martínez posted a formal apology on Instagram, acknowledging that emotion had got the better of him in the immediate aftermath of the defeat.

“My passionate and intense nature, combined with the frustration of defeat, led me to express my feelings at an inappropriate time and place, for which I apologise,” he said.

He added that his remarks had not helped foster the unity the club needs and reaffirmed his commitment to United’s ambitions. The tone was markedly different from a statement he had issued on Wednesday, in which he attempted to contextualise his frustration without fully acknowledging that the manner of his intervention had been problematic.

The episode has reopened familiar questions about United’s transfer strategy, the relationship between playing staff and the executive structure, and the mounting pressure on a club still searching for its footing in Europe’s elite competition.

For Martínez personally, the priority now is straightforward — to let his performances do the talking. He remains a significant presence in United’s defensive line when fit, and the club will need him focused and available in the weeks ahead.

Attention turns to Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United, where a positive result would go some way towards steadying nerves and restoring a measure of calm to a dressing room that could do without further distraction.

The apology may have defused the immediate crisis, but the underlying questions — about squad depth, recruitment philosophy and United’s readiness to compete at the highest level — have not gone away. For a club of United’s stature, operating under relentless scrutiny, confidence is rebuilt not through statements but through results, delivered consistently, over time.
