Eastleigh Tragedy: Police Give Update on Survivors and Latest Recovery

Police have provided a fresh update on the building collapse in Eastleigh, Nairobi, confirming that four people have been rescued alive while a woman’s body has been recovered from the rubble.

The National Police Service said the recovery was made on Friday, October 30, as search-and-rescue operations continued at the site of the multi-storey building that collapsed while under construction.

The incident occurred along 9th Street in Eastleigh on Friday, October 23, triggering a multi-agency response involving emergency personnel and specialised rescue equipment.

According to the police, four survivors have so far been pulled from the debris and taken to hospital for medical attention.

However, the recovery of the woman’s body marked a tragic development in the operation, which has continued for several days as teams search through the remains of the collapsed structure.

In its statement, the National Police Service conveyed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased while wishing those injured a quick and full recovery.

Authorities have also issued fresh guidance to families still looking for missing relatives, urging them to seek assistance through the Kenya Red Cross desk established at the scene.

Those seeking information about missing family members can also contact the emergency response number 1199, according to the police.

The police further appealed to members of the public to keep away from the affected site to avoid interfering with the ongoing rescue operation.

The restriction is intended to ensure emergency responders have sufficient space to operate and allow specialised equipment and rescue personnel to access the scene without obstruction.

Meanwhile, investigations into the circumstances that led to the collapse remain ongoing. The National Police Service said further information would be shared as new developments emerge.

The incident has drawn attention to the dangers associated with building failures and the challenges faced by rescue teams working to locate people who may still be trapped beneath heavy debris.

For families awaiting news of their missing relatives, authorities have advised using the established reporting channels to help coordinate the search and identification process.

Note: The source confirms four survivors and the recovery of one woman’s body. It does not establish the total number of people who were inside the building when it collapsed, so the article avoids speculating on that figure.
