How Sports Betting Evolved from Backroom Bookies to Digital Platforms

There was a time when betting on sport in Nigeria required little more than a football coupon, a trusted agent and a willingness to wait.

Long before smartphones turned predictions into a few taps on a screen, sports betting belonged to the world of pools, newspapers, betting shops and informal bookmakers.

Today, a punter can watch a Premier League match in Lagos and place a bet on the next goal, corner or card without leaving the sofa. The journey between those two worlds tells a fascinating story of technology, football culture and changing consumer habits.

The roots run deeper than the modern betting shop. Football pools became established in Nigeria during the colonial era and expanded after the Second World War, with Syrian and Lebanese entrepreneurs playing an important role in developing the business. By the 1960s, pools had become sufficiently popular to feature in newspapers, while regional governments began collecting taxes and licence fees from promoters. By the 1970s, pools betting had become one of Nigeria’s most popular forms of gambling.

But the industry remained overwhelmingly physical. Betting depended on agents, paper slips and physical locations. For many Nigerians, the bookmaker was not an anonymous website but a person they could see and speak to. That relationship between bettor and agent would later prove crucial when Nigeria’s modern sports-betting industry arrived.

The regulatory landscape also began to change. The National Lottery Act of 2005 created the National Lottery Regulatory Commission and sought to establish a formal framework for lottery-related activities, including sports and pools betting. Yet Nigeria’s regulatory story has always been complicated, with states developing their own gaming laws and authorities. In November 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that the National Lottery Act was beyond the constitutional powers of the National Assembly, further highlighting the longstanding federal-state tension over gaming regulation.

Then came the internet. Around 2009, NairaBet emerged as an important landmark, becoming the first Nigerian sports-betting operator to offer a fully functional website through which customers could deposit funds, place bets and withdraw winnings. Suddenly, betting no longer had to end at the shop door.

The smartphone accelerated that transformation. As internet access, mobile phones and digital payments became increasingly accessible, betting moved from the street corner to the pocket. Operators combined physical agent networks with websites and mobile services, creating a hybrid model particularly suited to Nigeria: technology for convenience, agents for familiarity and football for engagement.

Bet9ja’s emergence in 2013 demonstrated how quickly the market could evolve. Its early strategy included establishing a strong physical presence through agents and betting shops before expanding further into digital services. Soon, competition intensified, with multiple operators fighting for customers through wider betting markets, promotions, live betting and increasingly sophisticated mobile experiences.

Today’s Nigerian bettor therefore inhabits a radically different world from the pools player of previous generations. A match can generate hundreds of betting possibilities, while digital platforms can deliver odds and results almost instantly. The FCT Lottery Regulation Office’s current list, for example, includes numerous approved sports-betting operators, reflecting how crowded and professionalised the sector has become.

Yet the most remarkable part of the story is not simply that betting went digital. It is that an old habit adapted to a new Nigeria. The paper coupon became the mobile interface; the neighbourhood agent became a digital account; the bookmaker’s shop became an app. The technology changed almost everything, except the enduring Nigerian fascination with football, prediction and the possibility that the next result might change the day.
