● Lugazi FC 0-0 BUL FC
Lugazi FC and BUL FC played out a goalless draw at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe on Tuesday evening, ending the visitors’ perfect winning run in the Uganda Premier League.
Richard Ayiko was Lugazi’s standout performer, earning the Man of the Match award after a commanding display in defence as the hosts held the league leaders at bay on Matchday Six.
The result also offered a reunion of sorts for Lugazi coach Abbey Kikomeko, who faced his former employers, BUL, in a closely contested encounter that produced chances at both ends but no goals.
BUL arrived in Najjembe seeking to maintain their 100 per cent winning record, while Lugazi hoped to use home advantage to secure valuable points.
Both sides showed attacking intent from the opening exchanges, but neither could find the breakthrough.
Lugazi started brightly, winning an early corner that came to nothing before BUL responded with a free-kick near the penalty area. Byabacwezi took the set piece, which resulted in another corner for the visitors.
George Masembe then found space inside the box in the 12th minute, but his effort sailed over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Faizo Matovu came close with a header from Masembe’s free-kick, only for the ball to drift narrowly wide.
The hosts continued to push forward as the first half progressed, while BUL threatened through Byabacwezi, whose effort in the 26th minute was comfortably gathered by Lugazi goalkeeper Allan Batali.
Lugazi defender Daniel also went close with a header from Achidi’s cross from the left, but his attempt missed the target.
Byabacwezi headed over at the other end as both teams continued searching for an opener.
The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock before half-time was when Lugazi forced BUL goalkeeper Braddy into a fine save in the 44th minute.
Despite three minutes of added time, the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
BUL returned from the break with Martin Aprem replacing Byabacwezi as Alex Isabirye’s side sought to take control of the contest.
The visitors enjoyed a spell of possession, but Lugazi’s defence, marshalled by Ayiko, remained organised. Ayiko was particularly influential in clearing danger, including a BUL free-kick taken by Masembe shortly after the restart.
Lugazi still posed a threat going forward. In the 55th minute, Cromwell Rwothomio forced Braddy into action with a well-struck volley that tested the visitors’ goalkeeper.
BUL responded with an effort from Okello that struck the side netting, before making another change in the 59th minute, with Lawrence Kambugu replacing Richard Okello.
The game grew increasingly physical, with Masembe booked for BUL in the 60th minute, followed by Lugazi’s Amagu Anguti a minute later. Hamza Mulambuzi had earlier received a yellow card in the 46th minute.
Lugazi introduced Adam Mutesasira for Dickson Mataama in the 65th minute as the hosts looked for fresh attacking impetus.
At the other end, Batali remained alert, collecting a BUL free-kick before producing another important intervention later in the game.
The visitors made further changes in the 75th minute, bringing on Lawrence Olabora and Swabir Mpasa for Batholomew and Masembe respectively.
BUL continued to press, but Batali produced a brilliant save to deny the visitors before requiring medical attention after experiencing discomfort.
The goalkeeper’s resilience proved important as the contest entered its final stages.
Lugazi also suffered injury setbacks, with John Kokas stretched off in the 74th minute and Musa Ssali receiving similar treatment later in the second half.
BUL introduced David Mugalu for Reagan Kalyowa in the 85th minute, while Lugazi brought on Yusuf Mafabi for Ssali a minute later. Rashid Kawawa became the third Lugazi player booked when he received a yellow card in the 87th minute.
The visitors pushed for a late winner, earning consecutive corners during five minutes of added time. However, Ayiko remained decisive, clearing one delivery before another BUL attempt was dealt with.
The final whistle confirmed a goalless stalemate, with Lugazi’s defensive discipline and Batali’s goalkeeping helping them secure a point against the league leaders.
The draw leaves Lugazi 11th in the standings with seven points, while BUL remain top with 13 points from their opening matches.
However, the result ended BUL’s perfect winning run, with Isabirye’s side dropping two points for the first time this season. They retain a two-point advantage over second-placed NEC FC and still have a game in hand.
Lugazi will next host Express FC at Lugazi Stadium in Najjembe on October 28, 2026, while BUL travel to Hamz Stadium to face UPDF FC on October 18.
Elsewhere on Tuesday evening, Ntugasaze FC fell 2-0 to KCCA FC, who continued their winning run through goals from Hebert Achai in the 37th minute and Emmanuel Anyama in the 88th.
Matchday Six of the Uganda Premier League continues on Wednesday.
