Groote Schuur Hospital unveils upgraded emergency and trauma centre

In the critical moments of a medical emergency, the pressure is immense—not just for those in need of urgent care, but for their families who depend on swift responses and compassionate support, Cape {town} Etc reports.

At Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), this pressing reality forms the heart of its latest development: an enhanced Emergency and Trauma Centre, now operational and set for its official launch on 6 October 2026.

Following a substantial investment of approximately R200 million by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, this facility is intended to strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the Western Cape, equipping the hospital with state-of-the-art technology and resources tailored to meet the urgent needs of patients and healthcare professionals alike.

The Emergency Centre commenced operations on 28 July 2026, followed shortly by the Trauma Centre on 12 August 2026. With features such as advanced clinical infrastructure, dedicated trauma treatment areas, and improved resuscitation facilities, GSH has created a purpose-built environment focusing on emergency medical care.

Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness, Mireille Wenger, spoke on the critical nature of these investments: ‘Groote Schuur’s Emergency Centre is one of the busiest in Africa, treating between 3,500 and 4,500 patients every month. Our patients and staff deserve a facility equipped to respond effectively when people need urgent care, whether they arrive with serious injuries, acute medical conditions, or surgical emergencies,’

The centre embodies a commitment to ensuring access to quality, compassionate emergency care for all residents of the Western Cape.

Importantly, the updated centre recognises not just the needs of patients, but the emotional toll on their families during such distressing times. By including dedicated waiting areas, families can remain close to their loved ones while receiving timely updates from healthcare teams.

A notable introduction is the Patient Liaison Officer, a role created in direct response to feedback from families about their past experiences. Nkosi Wakashe, whose mother was previously treated at GSH, shared his past struggles navigating the healthcare system.

‘During a very difficult time when my mother was admitted, we faced the challenge of not knowing where to go for information or who to approach with our questions,’ Wakashe reflected.

This new role aims to alleviate such concerns, offering guidance and support during the chaos of emergencies.

Dr Shaheem de Vries, CEO of Groote Schuur Hospital, affirmed the hospital’s dedication to patient-centred care with this project. ‘This achievement reflects what can be accomplished through strong partnerships. We are grateful to the donors who supported Groote Schuur Hospital and helped equip the facility with technology that will directly benefit patients and healthcare teams,’ he stated, highlighting the significance of collaboration in enhancing patient care.

What stands out about Groote Schuur Hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Centre is the holistic approach to care. Every aspect has been designed with patients and their families in mind, from the modern infrastructure to the specialised roles created to assist during stressful times.

As South Africa’s healthcare landscape evolves, Groote Schuur Hospital remains at the forefront, investing in innovation and patient-centric services.
