Athletics Kenya (AK) has on Monday acknowledged the provisional suspension of seasoned marathon runner Peres Jepchirchir following an adverse analytical finding, reiterating its commitment to clean sport and the protection of fair competition.

In a statement responding to the decision announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Friday, the national athletics governing body said it remained committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity in the sport, despite the disappointing news involving one of Kenya's high-profile athletes.

“While it is unfortunate to receive such news regarding a high-profile athlete, Athletics Kenya remains firm in its stance on promoting clean sport and ensuring a level playing field for all competitors,” the federation said in a statement.

The AIU, the independent body responsible for safeguarding the integrity of athletics, imposed the provisional suspension following an adverse analytical finding from an anti-doping test. The finding triggered the action under the applicable anti-doping framework.

A provisional suspension is an interim measure that can prevent an athlete from competing while an anti-doping case is being handled. It should not, on its own, be interpreted as a final determination of an anti-doping rule violation.

The adverse analytical finding indicates that a sample has produced a result requiring further consideration under anti-doping rules. The circumstances of the finding, the substance involved and any subsequent explanation or challenge are matters that must be addressed through the established case management process.

**AIU testing and suspension process **

Athletics Kenya clarified that the testing procedures and the subsequent provisional suspension were handled directly by the AIU in its capacity as the designated Testing Authority.

According to the federation, the process was conducted in accordance with established anti-doping regulations, international standards and lawful case management protocols.

The clarification underscores the distinction between the responsibilities of the AIU and those of Athletics Kenya in handling anti-doping matters. The AIU oversees integrity-related cases in international athletics, while national bodies are expected to support efforts to ensure compliance with the applicable rules.

AK said it supported the work of anti-doping organisations and praised their efforts to maintain robust testing systems and protect athletes who compete within the rules.

The federation also emphasised the importance of ensuring that anti-doping procedures are conducted in a structured, transparent and lawful manner, allowing cases to be handled according to the relevant regulations.

Kenya backs AIU and ADAK

Athletics Kenya extended its support to both the AIU and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), recognising their roles in protecting the credibility of athletics and promoting a fair competitive environment.

The federation said it applauded the commitment of the two organisations to maintaining effective testing mechanisms, adding that such efforts were essential to protecting clean athletes and safeguarding the integrity of athletics worldwide.

“AK extends its full support to the rigorous efforts of both global and local anti-doping bodies, specifically the AIU and the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK),” the statement said.

The organisation added that consistent enforcement of anti-doping regulations was necessary to preserve confidence in the sport, particularly in Kenya, where distance running and marathon racing have earned the country a formidable international reputation.

Kenyan athletes have enjoyed tremendous success on the global stage, making the protection of the country's sporting reputation an important priority for the national federation.

However, Athletics Kenya stressed that maintaining that reputation required continued vigilance, effective testing and a firm commitment to ensuring that all competitors were subject to the same rules.

Spotlight on anti-doping compliance

Jepchirchir's provisional suspension places renewed attention on the importance of anti-doping compliance in elite athletics, where athletes are required to meet strict standards governing the use of prohibited substances and methods.

Under the anti-doping framework, an adverse analytical finding may lead to further proceedings, during which the relevant evidence and any response from the athlete are considered in accordance with the rules.

The provisional suspension is therefore distinct from a final sanction. The outcome of the case will depend on the applicable procedures and any further determinations made by the competent anti-doping authorities.

Athletics Kenya did not provide further details in its statement about the substance associated with the adverse analytical finding, the date of the test or the next steps in Jepchirchir's case.

No conclusion about the ultimate outcome of the proceedings should be drawn solely from the announcement of the provisional suspension.

The case also highlights the importance of clear communication and due process in anti-doping matters, particularly when they involve prominent athletes whose performances have contributed to the profile of Kenyan athletics internationally.

Zero-tolerance policy

Athletics Kenya reiterated that doping would not be tolerated in the sport, pledging to continue investing in athlete education, stronger testing frameworks and measures designed to promote fairness.

“Athletics Kenya reiterates its unwavering policy of zero tolerance to doping,” the federation said.

It added that it remained committed to educating athletes, strengthening testing frameworks and ensuring that fairness and integrity remained central to Kenyan athletics.

The federation's position reflects its stated intention to work with anti-doping authorities to prevent violations, promote awareness of athletes' responsibilities and ensure that competitors understand the importance of complying with anti-doping regulations.

For Kenya, a country whose international athletics standing has been built on the achievements of its distance runners, maintaining public confidence in the sport remains crucial.

As the AIU's process concerning Jepchirchir continues, Athletics Kenya has made clear that it intends to support the established anti-doping framework while maintaining its broader commitment to clean competition.

The case now falls within the applicable anti-doping procedures, with any further conclusions dependent on the outcome of the relevant process.
