Malawi has surpassed its national target in the latest polio vaccination campaign, reaching more than 7.3 million children under the age of 10.
According to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation,7,368,425 children were vaccinated during the nationwide campaign conducted from August 11 to 14, representing 104 percent of the target of 7,070,131 children.
The campaign used the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) as part of efforts to protect children and interrupt the transmission of poliovirus.
The ministry credited health workers and volunteers for helping reach children across the country, including those in hard-to-reach areas.
It also acknowledged the contribution of traditional and religious leaders, parents, caregivers and partners who supported community mobilisation and encouraged families to make children available for vaccination.
The ministry said the coverage demonstrated broad community participation in the campaign, while stressing that vaccination efforts must continue.
It has called on parents and caregivers to maintain routine immunisation and support future vaccination campaigns as Malawi continues its efforts to prevent and control polio.
