Sports Fund Administrator challenges federations to demonstrate impact of funding proposals

The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Wuaku, has challenged national sports federations to move beyond funding requests and present credible, results-oriented proposals capable of transforming sports development in Ghana.

He says sustainable sports financing must be driven by strategic planning, accountability and measurable outcomes rather than demands for financial support without clearly defined development targets.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement with national sports federations in Accra, Dr Wuaku stressed that the Fund’s success would depend on its ability to mobilise and manage resources responsibly while ensuring that investments translate into tangible improvements across the sporting sector.

“Talent alone cannot build a sporting nation. It takes investment, discipline, accountability and a shared commitment to turn potential into performance,” he said.

Dr Wuaku explained that the Ghana Sports Fund, established under the Ghana Sports Fund Act, 2025 (Act 1159), is intended to provide a sustainable financing framework for sports development.

He noted that the Fund’s mandate extends beyond raising and distributing money to building a system that supports athlete development, strengthens sporting institutions and promotes measurable national achievements.

The Administrator urged federations to develop proposals with clear objectives, realistic budgets, implementation timelines and defined outcomes.

He said federations must also demonstrate sound governance, maintain proper financial records and show how proposed investments would improve athlete development and competitive performance.

Dr Wuaku emphasised that eligibility to benefit from the Fund does not automatically guarantee financial support, as applications must follow the applicable procedures and approval processes.

The Act identifies federations and associations in good standing with the National Sports Authority as eligible beneficiaries, subject to the relevant requirements.

The Administrator said confidence in the Fund would depend on transparent processes, responsible resource management and the ability of beneficiaries to demonstrate impact.

He also encouraged federations to explore corporate sponsorships, private investment and other funding partnerships to complement public resources.

The engagement is expected to help the Fund better understand the challenges facing different sporting disciplines and identify priorities for future planning.

Dr Wuaku said the ultimate objective was to ensure that investment in sports produces stronger federations, better athlete development and improved sporting outcomes for Ghana.

“Our goal is not simply to raise money for sports. It is to build a system in which investment translates into measurable sporting success,” he emphasised.
