Is the AI apocalypse upon us? It's most likely not, but Claude, ChatGPT/Codex, and Grok users reported disruptions earlier on Thursday.
So people who used AI for free therapy sessions or making caricatures might have had a bit of a hard time.
The outage comes as OpenAI is believed to be teasing its next big model, GPT-6 Astra. The new model may see OpenAI models upgrade from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6
According to reports, the issue is affecting ChatGPT on the web, mobile, and desktop. Claude appears to experience the same outage, and Grok is having a service issue.
People around the world started reporting that ChatGPT and OpenAI's coding tool, Codex, were failing.
Some users could still access existing chats, while others couldn't create new chats or got error messages such as 404 Not Found. Reports came from several countries, suggesting it was not just one person's internet connection.
A 404 error basically means that an app asked a server for something and the server responded: "I can't find what you're asking for." In this case, that could be caused by a problem somewhere in OpenAI's systems, but a 404 message alone does not tell us exactly what broke.
At roughly the same time, users were also reporting problems with other major AI services, including Claude and Grok.
According to users on the Hacker News forum, users suggested a data-centre outage; an AWS or other cloud infrastructure problem; one AI service going down and users flooding competitors with traffic; or, jokingly, that the AI apocalypse had begun.
It is worth noting that none of those theories was confirmed in the discussion.
It was experiencing a real problem earlier, but OpenAI's official status page currently says its systems are fully operational. The status history shows that ChatGPT Work Mode experienced high error rates on Thursday and that the affected services later recovered.
