KMA Begins Eviction at Komfo Anokye Hospital Roundabout: Traders Face Major Crackdown

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced an operation to evict unauthorised traders occupying pavements and lorry stations around the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Roundabout in Kumasi.

The exercise forms part of efforts by the Assembly to restore order, improve pedestrian movement and address the growing congestion caused by commercial activities in unauthorised locations within the metropolis.

The operation is expected to affect traders who have established businesses on pedestrian walkways and other spaces designated for public use, particularly around the busy Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Roundabout.

The area is one of the major commercial and transportation centres in Kumasi, attracting significant human and vehicular traffic daily.

However, the increasing presence of traders on pavements and at lorry stations has raised concerns about obstruction, sanitation and the safety of pedestrians and motorists.

The Assembly’s decision to begin the eviction exercise signals a renewed effort to enforce regulations governing the use of public spaces and prevent unauthorised commercial activities from taking over important parts of the city.

Pavements are primarily designed to provide safe passage for pedestrians, while lorry stations are expected to facilitate the orderly movement of commercial vehicles and passengers.

When these spaces are occupied by unauthorised trading activities, pedestrians are often forced to compete with moving vehicles for space, creating inconvenience and potential safety risks.

The situation also contributes to traffic congestion, particularly in areas where commercial activities operate alongside public transportation services.

The KMA’s intervention is therefore expected to help reclaim these spaces and improve the general appearance of the area.

The exercise also brings renewed attention to the challenges confronting metropolitan authorities in managing street trading and maintaining order in rapidly expanding urban centres.

Although street trading remains an important source of livelihood for many residents, authorities have consistently faced difficulties balancing the economic interests of traders with the need to protect public spaces.

The latest operation highlights the Assembly’s determination to address unauthorised occupation of pavements and transport terminals as part of broader efforts to improve urban management in Kumasi.

Residents and commuters are expected to benefit from improved accessibility if the reclaimed spaces are maintained and effectively regulated.

However, the sustainability of the exercise will depend on the Assembly’s ability to ensure that traders do not return to the same locations after the eviction operation.

The KMA’s action sends a clear message that public spaces must remain accessible and that commercial activities should be conducted in locations approved by the relevant authorities.

As the eviction exercise continues, attention will be on how the affected traders respond and whether the Assembly can sustain its efforts to restore order around one of Kumasi’s busiest roundabouts.
