The Mutare Regional Court has sentenced a 35-year-old man from Mutare to an effective 17 years in prison for raping a 33-year-old woman with a mental illness.
The court heard that on 15 November 2025 at around 5 pm, the victim was on her way home after visiting a neighbouring village when the offender lured her into his house, saying he wanted to discuss an issue with her.
Once inside, he proposed a romantic relationship, which she refused. The court heard that he then threatened her, forcibly moved her onto his bed and raped her.
According to the NPAZ, the offender locked the victim in the room, briefly left to fetch water and returned and raped her again.
At around 9 pm, he took her towards her homestead. On finding that her family members were still awake, he diverted and ordered her to sleep at her uncle’s house, where she spent the night outside the kitchen unnoticed.
The matter came to light the following day when the victim disclosed what had happened to a fellow villager. The villager reported the case to the police, leading to the man’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
