Kabambe wants Ansah to update Malawians on Mutharika
UTM president Dalitso Kabambe has asked Vice President Dr Jane Mayemu Ansah to clarify whether she has been in contact with President Peter Mutharika and is receiving updates on government operations.
Kabambe says Malawians deserve clear and timely information about the country’s leadership amid growing public concern over Mutharika’s continued stay in South Africa and the challenges facing the country.
In a Facebook post addressed to Ansah, Kabambe also questioned whether Cabinet is meeting to discuss the country’s problems and develop practical solutions.
“May I kindly ask whether you spoke with the President before his departure, whether you have been in communication with him since, and whether you are able to provide an update on his wellbeing and current status?” he wrote.
Kabambe further asked whether Ansah was receiving regular updates from Chief Secretary to the Government on government business.
He said a clear and timely update from the Vice President would help reassure Malawians and strengthen public confidence in the country’s leadership.
“I appreciate the demands of your office and offer these questions in a spirit of respect and concern for Malawi’s wellbeing,” Kabambe said.
His call comes amid questions about Mutharika’s health and his continued stay in South Africa, where he has been away from Malawi.
However, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary General Peter Mukhito has dismissed reports that Mutharika is bedridden, saying the President is in robust health.
In a statement dated October 25, 2026, Mukhito said he met Mutharika in South Africa on Friday, October 23, and spent more than an hour with him.
“Throughout our interaction, His Excellency was cheerful, vibrant and in good health,” Mukhito said.
He urged Malawians to treat reports about the President’s health with caution, arguing that such claims should be supported by credible evidence.
Mukhito also maintained that Mutharika continues to lead the country despite being physically outside Malawi, saying modern technology enables him to communicate with government officials and attend to state business remotely.
“The same principle applies to the Presidency. His Excellency continues to provide leadership to our country despite being physically outside Malawi,” he said.
Mutharika defeated former president Lazarus Chakwera in the September 2025 presidential election to return to power for a second term, which runs until 2030.
His continued stay in South Africa has nevertheless attracted public attention, with questions emerging about his health and how government business is being handled in his absence.
