Rural Connectivity: FG Begins Telecom Tower Deployment, Targets 20m Nigerians
AI summary
The federal government has commenced the rollout of 3,700 telecommunications towers nationwide under the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project (NUCAP), targeting nearly 20 million Nigerians in underserved and unserved communities who lack adequate access to mobile and internet services.
The minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced on his X formerly Twitter) handle the commencement of the project with the commissioning of its first telecommunications site in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, describing the initiative as a major step towards expanding connectivity and ensuring that rural communities participate in Nigeria’s digital economy.
Tijani said the project was designed to address persistent gaps in telecommunications coverage, particularly in communities where the cost of deploying infrastructure and geographical challenges have discouraged commercial investments.
He said the initiative was essential to the government’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy, noting that expanding connectivity would create opportunities for millions of Nigerians currently excluded from the benefits of digital services.
According to the minister, connectivity is not merely about making telephone calls or accessing the internet but also about enabling citizens to participate in economic activities and access essential services.
He explained that farmers who struggle to reach buyers, traders unable to receive digital payments and families who cannot make emergency calls because of poor network coverage would benefit from improved telecommunications infrastructure.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition for a $1 trillion economy requires every Nigerian to have the opportunity to contribute and share in its prosperity. That is why this investment matters,” Tijani said.
The minister added that the government was committed to extending digital access to communities that had remained disconnected, stressing that the project would help reduce the digital divide between urban centres and rural settlements.
The 3,700 planned telecommunications sites are expected to extend mobile network coverage to nearly 20 million Nigerians. The project will also incorporate public Wi-Fi, digital learning solutions and energy infrastructure to support connectivity in areas where electricity supply remains a challenge.
The initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader digital infrastructure development programme, which includes Project BRIDGE, designed to deploy approximately 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cables nationwide.
While the fibre project is expected to strengthen the country’s broadband backbone, NUCAP will extend telecommunications access to communities that lack adequate network infrastructure. Together, the initiatives are intended to improve the reach and capacity of Nigeria’s digital connectivity infrastructure.
However, the impact of the tower deployment will depend on the timely completion and activation of the sites, the reliability of network services and the affordability of data for residents in beneficiary communities.
The government had earlier outlined a funding structure for NUCAP through a special-purpose vehicle in which the Ministry of Finance Incorporated would hold a 90 per cent equity stake, while private investors would be expected to contribute about $35 million for a 10 per cent stake.
Tijani urged Nigerians to follow the project’s implementation and check whether their communities were covered by the deployment plan through the ministry’s official website.
The project information is available at [NUCAP official website](https://fmcide.gov.ng/nucap/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), where residents can explore the initiative and identify communities targeted for improved connectivity.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding digital access nationwide, declaring that the objective was to ensure that no community was left behind.
