JOHANNESBURG – Axed EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected back in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Friday for his corruption trial.
Mkhwanazi will appear alongside his co-accused: former Ekurhuleni city manager Imogen Mashazi, former head of legal services Kemi Behari and former human resources head Linda Gxasheka.
The four were arrested in July on charges including corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

Mashazi, Behari and Gxasheka were each granted R50,000 bail. Mkhwanazi was also granted bail in this matter but remains behind bars in connection with a separate case.
Following these proceedings, Mkhwanazi is expected to appear in a separate case involving alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Chris Steyn. The case relates to alleged corruption in the Ekurhuleni blue-lights scandal.
The trio face six counts of corruption, one count of fraud and one count of defeating the ends of justice.
The charges stem from an arrangement between the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and CAT VIP Protection, a private security company associated with Matlala.
Details of both cases emerged during the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
