Blackout in Gomoa Potsin after ECG inspection assault

A large section of Gomoa Potsin has been left without electricity for three days after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected power to the community.

The outage follows a dispute between members of a household and an ECG monitoring team during an inspection of a faulty meter, which left a staff member injured. In response, the utility company cut power to the area, disrupting local businesses and daily livelihoods.

According to a Citi News report, residents condemned the attack on the ECG staff while appealing for power to be restored.

“I operate a drinking spot and sell ice cream. People are not buying because the drinks are not cold. The ice cream stock I had has also gone bad. Most potential customers assume I’m closed because of the darkness,” shop owner Elizabeth Tetteh said.

Other residents noted that the blackout has raised security concerns.

“We do not condone violence, so we are appealing to ECG to reconnect us to the grid. Those of us living at New Site are really suffering. Thieves took advantage of the darkness to break into one of my apartments and steal cables,” another resident explained.

Cold store operator Azara shared that she was forced to rely on a generator after losing stock: “I sell meat and drinks, so I had to get a standby generator after some of the meat went bad. We have been without power for three days now.”

Ebenezer Adams, the Assemblyman for the Potsin Electoral Area, warned that livelihoods are at risk and urged ECG to restore service. He also pledged to assist authorities in apprehending the individual responsible for the assault.

“We render an unqualified apology to them. They should temper justice with mercy and reconnect us to the national grid,” Adams said.
