There is one devastating form of fraud that we continue to ignore.

It is time for Zimbabwe to confront a silent, devastating crisis tearing through our families, destroying lives, and fracturing the very fabric of our society.

Paternity fraud is no longer a rare, isolated anomaly whispered about in private quarters; it has become an alarming socio-economic epidemic.

Across our towns and villages, countless men are pouring their sweat, blood, resources, and unconditional love into raising children who are biologically not theirs, entirely unaware of the deception.
When the truth inevitably surfaces—often years or decades later—the fallout is nothing short of catastrophic.
We cannot continue to sweep this agony under the carpet.
The discovery of non-paternity is a psychological atom bomb.
It triggers bitter, irreparable divorces and fuels horrific instances of domestic violence that, far too often, end in tragic homicide or suicide.
Men who spent a lifetime sacrificing everything for their sons and daughters find their worlds entirely shattered overnight.
Yet, the most tragic victims of this deception are the innocent children.
A child who grew up wrapped in the secure warmth of a father’s love suddenly finds that love curdling into resentment, betrayal, and hate.
When the illusion shatters, these blameless young ones face immediate rejection, trauma, and societal humiliation, often being cast out of the only homes and families they have ever known.
How can we, as a nation, allow children to be weaponized in a web of deceit, only to be abandoned when the inevitable truth breaks open?
This rampant uncertainty has infected the relationship between fathers and their newborns from the very start.
Because high-profile cases of paternity fraud dominate public discourse, a pervasive cloud of suspicion now hangs over modern fatherhood.
Honest, loving men are forced into an agonizing psychological posture—holding back their hearts, being overly cautious with their emotional investment, and fearing to fully bond with their babies because of the nagging, painful doubt lingering at the back of their minds.
No father should have to look at his newborn with fear and suspicion instead of pure joy.
To heal this crisis, Zimbabwe must take a bold, uncompromising legislative leap.
We need a law that compels mandatory DNA paternity testing, ideally integrated into routine prenatal healthcare alongside standard HIV and STI screenings.
Alternatively, this testing should be executed immediately during the postnatal period before a birth certificate is issued.
Opponents of such a measure will inevitably seek refuge behind abstract arguments of individual privacy and bodily rights.
But whose rights are truly being protected when the fundamental right of a father to know the truth of his lineage is trampled upon?
What about the absolute right of the child to know their true biological identity and heritage from day one?
Hiding behind human rights rhetoric to shield deceit is a perversion of justice.
Biological truth is not an attack on rights; it is the ultimate protection of them.
Mandatory testing at birth removes the social stigma entirely.
When DNA verification becomes a universal legal requirement rather than an individual accusation, no woman is singled out, and no man is forced to navigate the uncomfortable dynamic of demanding a test.
It standardizes transparency as a routine administrative step of ushering a new life into the nation.
If medical protocols make universal prenatal testing complex, then immediate postnatal testing must be made non-negotiable.
Establishing biological truth at birth eliminates decades of accumulated lies before they can compound into violence and heartbreak.
It gives fathers absolute peace of mind, ensures legal birth registers reflect undeniable reality, guarantees children their rightful heritage, and restores integrity to the family structure.
The time for timid excuses is over.
Parliament must act swiftly to introduce mandatory DNA paternity testing at birth.
It is the only just, humane, and decisive way to protect our men, safeguard our children, and restore honesty to Zimbabwean society.
We cannot sit idly by while families disintegrate and lives are destroyed by preventable deception.
