The unsecured explosives were discovered in an open field earlier this week, prompting a rapid response from specialized law enforcement units to neutralize the threat.
The incident unfolded on the evening of 24 September 2026, at approximately 20:00. A passer-by noticed the suspicious devices lying in the open field and immediately alerted law enforcement. Recognizing the severe risk posed by the unsecured munitions in a residential area, officers quickly secured the perimeter and called in the police Explosives Unit to handle the situation.
According to a Roodepoort Police spokesperson, the specialized Explosives Unit arrived on the scene and successfully mitigated the danger by safely removing the two hand grenades. The spokesperson confirmed that the area was thoroughly checked by the bomb squad to ensure no additional hazardous materials were left behind.
At this stage, no arrests have been made in connection with the abandoned munitions. The Roodepoort Police spokesperson noted that comprehensive investigations are currently underway to establish the exact circumstances surrounding how the grenades ended up discarded in the open field.
