Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president, Gilbert Mittawa, has said he is yet to make his final decision on defending his position.
The Super League governing body is expected to go to the polls next year, with Mittawa earlier this year indicating that he would not contest.
He said his decision was guided by responsible leadership principles and his belief that an organisation needs periodic renewal.
At the time, Mittawa pointed to progress in professional standards, fixture reliability and sponsorship as evidence that he had done his part.
“After doing the work, you have to step down and allow others the opportunity to take over and continue.
What matters most is progress, not individual positions. The league is more professional now. Fixtures are reliable, teams can plan accordingly and we have good sponsorship,” he said.
But a few months down the line, Mittawa says he is weighing his options.
“I made it clear that I would not seek re-election, and I believe I did my part.
But there are clubs that are pushing for my return. They say my contesting would ensure continuity considering that we secured the FDH Bank sponsorship, with fixtures running smoothly. But I have not made up my mind as we still have months to go before the polls,” he said.
Football Association of Malawi executive member Chimango Munthali is the only person to have publicly declared interest in the Sulom presidency.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Suom General Secretary Williams Banda could join the race.
Mittawa was elected unopposed on March 30 2024 during an extraordinary general meeting held at Ufulu Gardens in Lilongwe.
