South Africa 2026 Elections: Youth Wings Lose Influence as Older Leaders Cling to Power

JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — As South Africa heads toward the 2026 Local Government Elections, the relevance and influence of political party youth structures are facing intense scrutiny. According to political analyst Tshepo Matseba, these once-powerful engines of mobilization and leadership are increasingly being sidelined by entrenched, older politicians who prioritize retaining power over fostering authentic, youth-led policy transformation.

The core of the issue, Matseba explains, extends beyond the credibility of the youth leaders themselves. It points to a broader lack of willingness among major political formations to genuinely support youth-led programs. While historical movements like the ANC Youth League previously drove high levels of activism, today’s youth structures across the country are largely struggling to maintain their footing. The notable exception, Matseba notes, is the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student command and its youth structures, which retain influence largely due to their inherently younger demographic.

A significant barrier to youth influence is the current leadership dynamic at the local government level. Matseba highlighted that many positions are occupied by middle-aged to senior individuals who are primarily focused on addressing their own employment security, rather than championing authentic policy transformation for the younger generation.

Historically, young people have served as internal activists within political parties, pushing critical agendas that older, more established leaders are often uncomfortable addressing. These include urgent demands for solutions to youth unemployment, access to free education, and free healthcare. However, because youth structures consistently challenge the status quo on these policy fronts, they have been systematically relegated to the backbench.

In the current electoral cycle, youth leagues are frequently utilized merely as campaign mechanisms. They are mobilized to help senior leaders secure necessary votes and support, only to disappear from the decision-making table afterward. On a practical level, they are denied the right environment to influence the policy direction of their respective parties or the country at large.

Matseba emphasized that this dynamic represents a dual failure. It is not a failure of the youth themselves, but a deliberate failure by larger political parties to provide young people with a platform to own the national conversation. Consequently, structured political youth environments have become weaker and less coordinated in dominating political dialogue.

This disconnect is evident in current national debates. For instance, the ongoing national dialogue surrounding illegal immigration is not being led or owned by structured political youth leagues. Instead, that narrative is being driven by unaffiliated young people and independent movements operating outside traditional party structures.

Ultimately, Matseba concluded that senior party leaders bear significant responsibility for this decline. By deliberately disempowering youth structures, entrenched politicians are ensuring their own continued grip on power and positions, leaving the next generation of South African leaders without a meaningful voice in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
