Agbara Nla: As Mount Zion 1993 Classic Returns

In 1993, Agbara Nla came into a Nigeria that did not have social media, streaming platforms, sophisticated cameras or the digital influence we have today. Yet, somehow, the movie found its way into homes, communities and the hearts of a generation. Agbara Nla: The Return has now been reimagined and brought into a new light through the creative genius of Mike Bamiloye and his son, Damilola Mike-Bamiloye. What began as a desire to remake an old classic has, just like that, birthed a revival that is shaking the entire country.

When it was first released, Agbara Nla became part of a cultural moment. It carried conversations about faith, spiritual warfare, the power of God and the reality of the unseen into homes across the nation. For many, it was also regarded as one of the films that helped establish a strong Christian filmmaking culture in Nigeria.

As anticipation for the film began building ahead of its official release on October 1, 2026, many people started reliving old memories, and the movie suddenly became a must-watch. Confirming the demand for the film, tickets sold in units of thousands during the pre-sale period before October 1. As fate would have it, this provided an early indication of what was about to come.

A few days into October, social media began buzzing with accounts of cinema-goers who had encountered the film. Videos showing audiences being spiritually moved filled social media platforms, with some moments capturing people visibly responding to the movie inside cinemas. Somehow, what began as a cinema experience started to take on the atmosphere of a revival.

Now, 33 years later, Agbara Nla: The Return has been brought to the cinema with better cameras, picture quality, sound, visual effects and technology, providing viewers with a new and more entertaining experience. Across the X platform, many have spoken about how the film is changing the narrative of gospel filmmaking and helping to bring the Mount Zion Film Institute back to centre stage.

Several pastors have also embraced the cinema experience, joining fans who are eager to see the movie. Among them are Pastor Emmanuel and Laju Iren, Pastor Philip Olubakin, The Winlos, Lawrence Oyor and Gaise Baba, alongside other esteemed gospel ministers and actors.

The message of Agbara Nla points audiences back to the truth that there is a power above every power. The film has shattered expectations, broken records and set a new standard. It has touched, and continues to touch, hearts, sparked a revolution and ignited a revival. All of this suggests that the project is more than a film; it has become a Christian movement.

From the trailers to the reactions from audiences, the film appears to have exceeded expectations, and its impact is expected to reach even more people in the coming weeks.

With the euphoria surrounding the project, Mike Bamiloye expressly asked, “Who said revival can only break out in church?” He further disclosed his experience after watching the movie in a cinema.

“I went to the cinema to watch Agbara Nla, and honestly, I am still trying to process the experience.

“Some of you have been tagging me in videos you’ve seen online, especially the moments where you see me caught up in the Spirit. But let me take you through my experience.

“First, I want to celebrate the entire Mount Zion crew. What you have produced with this movie is exceptional! When we arrived, the crowd was something else. So many people had come to watch that some were asked to wait in line or return later.

“Thankfully, we had booked our tickets in advance, and we started watching around 2:30 p.m. Then the movie started. Within the first ten minutes, I knew I was not watching an ordinary movie.

“The cinematography? Exceptional! The storytelling? Incredible! And in between all the intense moments, there were so many naturally funny moments that had the whole cinema laughing. I honestly don’t know how they balanced it so well, but the humour flowed without taking anything away from the weight of the story.”

After the film’s success in Lagos, the excitement spread to Abuja, Benin and several other locations, creating an atmosphere unlike any other and paving the way for a form of ministration to hearts without a microphone or pastor, but through pure storytelling that speaks to people in truth.

London has also caught the bug, with the film’s UK release gaining further momentum following confirmation of its BBFC rating. The film has officially been certified Age 15 by the BBFC. With demand across the UK reportedly massive, IFEC (Independent Film Exhibition Consultancy) has pushed to expand its cinema lineup ahead of the Friday, October 16 launch.

Fans have therefore been urged to get their tickets early so they do not miss the experience.

Liberia and Canada have also joined the movement, with several cinemas and viewing points across cities in both countries scheduling dates and times for screenings.

In Nigeria alone, the film has recorded thousands of ticket sales, with more than 30,000 people reportedly having watched it in cinemas in less than two weeks. As the days turn into weeks, more is expected from the film and the impact it will have across Nigeria and beyond.

Truly, Agbara Nla: The Return is shaping up to be a revival unlike any seen before.
