Milnerton set for major road upgrades as resurfacing begins

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is gearing up for significant improvements to key roadways in Milnerton, with resurfacing work on the horizon from Wednesday, 23 September 2026, ***Cape {town} Etc ***reports.

The initiative aims to enhance the integrity and safety of the roads while providing a smoother driving experience for the community.

The resurfacing project will specifically target Marine Drive/R27, which stretches between Lagoon Beach Drive and Broad Road, as well as Koeberg Road from Boundary Road to Knysna Road. The visible work is expected to commence later in the month on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, and is slated to continue through to Thursday, 5 November 2026.

Work will take place nightly, from 19:00 to 05:30, Sundays to Fridays, including public holidays, to minimise disruption during peak travel times.

This ambitious undertaking, covering approximately 3.4 kilometres, is part of the City’s regular road maintenance programme, designed to maintain and improve the condition of these vital transportation routes.

‘This important project will provide road users with a smoother travelling surface and help us to keep Cape Town moving,’ said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility.

Specific tasks involved in the project include milling and replacing sections of the existing road surface, repairs to the road base, and replacing damaged or missing kerbs. To further enhance safety, retro-reflective road markings will also be reinstated following the resurfacing work.

During the construction phase, one lane will be worked on at a time to minimise traffic disruptions. Residents and road users are advised to proceed with caution in work areas and anticipate potential delays.

Adding a community benefit to the project, approximately five local jobseekers registered on the City’s jobseekers database will receive temporary work opportunities during the resurfacing efforts.

The project not only focuses on improving infrastructure but also supports local employment, as Quintas noted, ‘While we improve our roads, we can also provide practical opportunities for people in our communities.’

As construction progresses, residents and businesses can expect a degree of noise and temporary traffic disruptions.

The City urges the community to stay informed and remain patient, as these enhancements are integral to the improvement of Milnerton’s road network.
