Putellas Makes History, Wins 3rd Women’s Ballon d’Or
Alexia Putellas has won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for a third time, becoming the first player to claim the prestigious individual award on three occasions.
The Spanish midfielder, who previously won the award in 2021 and 2022, was crowned at the Ballon d’Or ceremony, adding another major honour to her collection.
Putellas, who now plays for London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League (WSL), enjoyed the latest recognition following her achievements with Barcelona, where she served as captain.
Her victory added to Spain’s success at the ceremony, while Barcelona also continued to feature prominently among the award winners.
In her acceptance speech, delivered partly through an interpreter, Putellas expressed her delight at returning to the ceremony and congratulated the other nominees and winners.
“It’s a pleasure to be here again. I don’t know what to say. Too many things. Congrats to all the nominees and winners,” she said.
The midfielder paid tribute to her former Barcelona team-mates, noting that the number of players from the club nominated for awards reflected their collective achievements.
“I want to say thank you to my team-mates. So many Barca players were nominated and that shows the season we had. Any of them could be here giving this speech,” she said.
Putellas also reflected on the challenges the team overcame during the campaign, describing her role as captain as a source of pride.
She thanked Barcelona’s coach, backroom staff, medical team and supporters for their contributions and continued support throughout her 14 years with the club.
“Thanks for all the respect and love you have shown me for 14 years. Thank you for all these moments and all these years. This prize is for Barcelona,” she added.
The third triumph further cements Putellas’ place among the most decorated players in women’s football, having previously established herself as one of the leading figures in the game with her consecutive Ballon d’Or victories in 2021 and 2022.
