Bad News for Ruto, Sifuna and Kalonzo as Another Prominent Figure Enters the 2027 Presidential Race

Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairman Macharia Njeru has joined the growing list of politicians seeking to succeed President William Ruto in the August 2027 General Election.

Njeru will contest the presidency on the Mwongozo Mpya Party (MMP) ticket, promising changes in leadership, public spending and the management of government affairs. His entry adds another name to the list of candidates preparing to challenge Ruto at the ballot. Citizen +1

The constitutional lawyer announced his presidential bid on October 5, 2026, but his campaign has continued to attract attention as his party outlines its plans for the upcoming election.

Speaking in Ol-Kalou, Nyandarua County, on Wednesday, October 28, Njeru said his party was ready to take part in the national political contest. He also indicated that MMP intends to field candidates for elective positions across the country. Citizen

The former IPOA chairperson has criticised what he considers poor leadership and wasteful government spending. He has argued that Kenya needs better financial management, accountability and stronger public institutions to improve the lives of ordinary citizens. Kenyans +1

Njeru has also raised concerns about poverty, unemployment and access to basic services, including water and healthcare. He believes experienced professionals should participate in politics instead of leaving leadership to a small group of established politicians.

His party has also announced plans to conduct grassroots outreach through ward-level meetings and engage young people as it prepares for the election. MMP says it will use transparent nominations to select candidates for different elective positions. Kenyans +1

The party has further indicated that it remains open to working with political groups that share its values, although it intends to maintain its independence.

Njeru’s entry comes as political leaders and parties continue positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. President Ruto is expected to face competition from several opposition figures and other presidential hopefuls seeking to convince voters that they can offer a different approach to leadership.

However, declaring a presidential bid is only the beginning. Njeru will need to build a strong national campaign, attract supporters across different regions and persuade voters that his proposed reforms can address Kenya’s economic and governance challenges.

With less than a year remaining before the August 2027 General Election, attention will now turn to how the new entrant builds his political support.

Will Macharia Njeru emerge as a serious challenger to President Ruto, or will established political figures dominate the 2027 presidential race?
