A Member of the County Assembly (MCA) from Western Kenya has urged President William Ruto to take tough action against opposition leaders, singling out Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna over what he described as abusive remarks.
The MCA called for the arrest and imprisonment of opposition politicians whom he accused of using inappropriate language when criticising the government.
His remarks have added to the ongoing political debate surrounding the relationship between the Kenya Kwanza administration and opposition leaders as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna, who has emerged as a vocal critic of Ruto’s administration, has repeatedly questioned the government’s policies and defended the right of opposition politicians to hold leaders accountable.
The senator’s criticism has attracted both support and condemnation, with political leaders divided over the language used during public rallies and political engagements.
The Western Kenya MCA’s demand for tough action against the opposition is likely to generate further debate about freedom of expression, political accountability and the limits of acceptable public criticism.
Kenya’s Constitution protects freedom of expression and allows citizens and political leaders to criticise the government. However, the law also provides for action against specific unlawful conduct, with any criminal allegations requiring proper investigation and due process.
During his remarks, the MCA also compared Kenya’s political environment with those of Uganda and Tanzania, drawing attention to differences in political leadership and the treatment of opposition figures in the three countries.
He further praised the government’s development projects, suggesting that the administration’s achievements deserved recognition despite criticism from political opponents.
The comments come at a time when political leaders are increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the next general election, with government supporters defending Ruto’s record while opposition figures continue to challenge his leadership.
Sifuna and other opposition leaders have remained prominent voices in discussions about the economy, governance and the direction Kenya should take before 2027.
The MCA’s remarks are expected to attract reactions from supporters of both sides, particularly over his call for the imprisonment of political opponents.
As political competition intensifies, the debate over criticism of the government and the protection of constitutional rights is likely to remain a major issue in Kenya’s political discourse.
