Okpebholo Appoints Ex-Council Chairman Ilaboya Grassroots Sports Adviser
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has appointed former Owan West Local Government Area Chairman, Hon. Frank Areguame Ilaboya, as Special Adviser on Grassroots Sports Mobilisation.
The appointment, conveyed in a letter dated October 9, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, takes immediate effect.
According to the letter, Ilaboya is entitled to the official remuneration and benefits provided under the Political and Public Officers Emolument (Amendment) Law, 2023, which regulates the earnings of political appointees and public office holders in the state.
Ilaboya brings experience in sports administration, media and grassroots governance to his new role.
His appointment is expected to support efforts to strengthen grassroots sports development, identify emerging talents and expand opportunities for young athletes across Edo State.
The role also places emphasis on mobilising communities for sports participation and creating pathways for talented youngsters to progress from local competitions to higher levels of competition.
Ilaboya, a former chairman of Owan West Local Government Area, is expected to work towards advancing grassroots sports initiatives across the state.
The appointment comes amid continuing efforts by state governments to harness sports as a platform for youth engagement and talent development.
However, the extent to which the new adviser’s appointment will translate into improved grassroots facilities and structured talent-development programmes will depend on the policies and initiatives implemented under his mandate.
