KARIBA, Aug. 28 (NewsDay Live) — Rural Infrastructure Development Agency acting Kariba district head Ignatius Chiome, who is facing culpable homicide charges over the Mbuya Nehanda ferry disaster, was Friday granted US$500 bail by a Kariba court
Chiome is accused in connection with the Aug. 11 Lake Kariba ferry disaster, which claimed 97 lives, while 77 people survived.
The matter was briefly heard on Thursday before being postponed after the court ruled that Chiome’s bail application was not properly before it.
As part of his bail conditions, Chiome was ordered to appear at the Karoi Regional Court on Sept. 4, not to interfere with witnesses and to continue residing at his stated address.
He was also ordered to surrender his travel documents to the Kariba Magistrates Court.
However, the court was informed through the registry office that his passport had expired in 2023.
The case will proceed at the Karoi Regional Court on September 4.
