BOST denies fuel shortage threat in Ghana — MyJoyOnline

Ghanaian company BOST Energies Limited stated that the reduction in fuel export volumes to Burkina Faso and Mali is not linked to the risk of an imminent shortage in Ghana. The company stressed that there is no threat of a near-term fuel shortage in the country and that the supplies were not reduced because of such concerns.

Company’s explanation

As MyJoyOnline reports, the clarification was issued after an interview that BOST Energies Managing Director Afezi Awunor gave to Reuters on the sidelines of an energy conference in Bangkok. According to the company, its executive’s remarks about managing exports to prioritize the domestic market were published without full context.

BOST Energies said this could have created the impression of a possible fuel shortage in Ghana. The company rejected this interpretation.

Modernization of the Bolgatanga depot

According to BOST Energies, the reduction in exports to the two Sahel countries is largely related to the modernization of the company’s depot in Bolgatanga. This is the northernmost facility in its network and the designated point for fuel supplies to the Sahel market.

The company stated that political, security, or diplomatic factors did not influence the decision. Under normal conditions, fuel for regional exports is transported through a network of pipelines and barges between depots from southern Ghana to the north of the country.

While work in Bolgatanga is nearing completion, BOST Energies is supplying fuel to the regional market from its coastal depot in Tema using tanker trucks. According to the company, this arrangement is intended to ensure equal access to fuel across different demand zones in Ghana. Full capacity for regional supplies is planned to be restored after the modernization is completed.
