66th Independence: Jonathan Calls For Good Governance, Rule Of Law
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on leaders at all levels to prioritise good governance, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence anniversary.
Jonathan, in an Independence Day message, said Nigeria’s future depended on responsible leadership, national unity and the collective commitment of citizens to addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands,” he said.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, the former president acknowledged the challenges confronting the country but said Nigerians had consistently demonstrated resilience.
He urged citizens to remain hopeful and united, particularly as the country approaches another electoral season.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritize actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” Jonathan said.
He said Nigeria could achieve sustainable development by effectively harnessing its diversity and abundant natural and human resources.
Jonathan also urged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous in working towards a better country and a prosperous future for future generations.
He, however, said achieving that future required leaders to demonstrate greater responsibility and patriotism.
“Yet, for this future to be realized, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” he said.
Jonathan called for personal sacrifice, accountability and good governance in confronting the country’s social and economic challenges.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritizing personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to national service and work towards building a peaceful, secure and equitable country.
