Memory Chip Prices are Pushing Laptops up Again. A Refurbished Business Laptop is the Cheaper Route

That new laptop you've been eyeing probably costs more than it did at the start of the year. We've reported several times on how AI's appetite for memory chips is pushing up prices on everything from Kindles to MacBooks, and prices are forecast to keep rising.

TrendForce said on September 30 that conventional DRAM contract prices should rise another 10–15% quarter over quarter in the last three months of 2026. NAND flash, the storage chips inside your SSD, is expected to climb 15–20%. The research firm added that notebook inventories are "increasingly reflecting higher component costs."

If you work remotely or you're a student who needs a reliable machine for the next few years, there's a cheaper route than paying the 2026 premium: a professionally refurbished business laptop.

Why new laptops cost more this year

Memory makers are putting more of their capacity into high-bandwidth memory for AI servers. That leaves less for the RAM and storage that go into phones and PCs, so laptop brands pay more for those parts.

They pass the cost on in two ways. Some raise the sticker price. Others hold the price and cut the specs. They ship 8GB of RAM or a smaller SSD where last year's model had more.

The second one is easier to miss. An 8GB laptop at last year's price looks fine in a store, then starts to stutter once you have a video call and 30 browser tabs open.

A refurbished laptop's RAM and SSD were bought years ago. What you pay for it now depends mostly on its age and condition, so this year's chip contracts barely move the price.

Business-grade versus consumer build

Most laptops on the refurbished market come out of corporate and government fleets, which means Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes turn up more than anything else. Organizations buy them in bulk and often retire them after three or four years on a fixed refresh schedule, whether or not they still run well.

These were never budget products. Business lines are built for years of daily use by staff who don't own the hardware and don't treat it gently. Many ThinkPad and Latitude models are tested against MIL-STD-810H, a US military standard that covers drops, vibration, humidity and temperature extremes. Few consumer laptops at the same new price go through that.

Repairs are the other big difference. Business models more often have a replaceable SSD and RAM slots, and manufacturers publish service manuals and stock spare parts for fleet buyers. A worn keyboard or a tired battery becomes a cheap fix. Many thin consumer laptops solder the RAM to the motherboard, so the 8GB you buy is the 8GB you keep.

That changes how long each machine stays useful. A 2023 ThinkPad with 16GB of RAM and a fresh battery can handle writing, research, video calls and coding classes for several more years. A new 8GB consumer laptop may hit its limits sooner, and you can't upgrade your way out.

The trade-offs are real. Older units carry older processors, and Windows 11 needs at least an Intel 8th-gen or AMD Ryzen 2000-series chip plus TPM 2.0, so very old stock won't qualify. Battery health varies from unit to unit. Some base fleet configurations also shipped with dim, low-resolution screens and 720p webcams, which matters if you spend half your day on calls.

What to check before you buy refurbished: grading, warranty and returns

Every refurbished listing should state a cosmetic grade. A Grade A machine should look close to new, and a Grade B unit works the same but shows cosmetic wear, which is where most of the savings are. In Australia, Australian Computer Traders' refurbished range is one example of how grading works: the Brisbane company has resold ex-government computers since 1993 and lists each device as Grade A or Grade B after technician testing. Whichever seller you use, look for a warranty of at least 12 months that can be extended to two years, and a 30-day return window.

Next, ask for the battery's health as a percentage of its original capacity. Anything above about 80% is fine for daily use. Below that, plan for a replacement or ask the seller to fit one before it ships.

Confirm the exact processor generation, not only "Core i5", since an 8th-gen and a 12th-gen i5 are years apart in performance. Also check that the laptop comes with a clean, licensed copy of Windows and that the previous owner's data was wiped.

"Used" and "refurbished" aren't the same thing on a listing. A used laptop is often sold as-is. A refurbished one should come with a grade and a written warranty. If a listing gives neither, keep scrolling.

Once it arrives, run through our checklist of tests for a pre-owned Windows laptop before the return window closes.

When new still makes sense

If you edit 4K video or want Microsoft's Copilot+ features, you need a modern GPU or NPU that ex-fleet machines don't have. If all-day battery life straight out of the box matters most, a new ARM-based laptop will outlast a refurbished Intel unit on a single charge.

For most remote workers and students, though, the daily work is documents and video calls. A well-graded ThinkPad or Latitude with a proper warranty handles that for less than a new consumer model.
