PM Ramgoolam Unveils New National Aviation Council to Overhaul Air Access

Prime Minister Dr Navin Ramgoolam announced the move following a meeting lasting over an hour with senior officials from Airport Holdings Ltd (AHL) and national carrier Air Mauritius.

The council will bring together industry professionals with proven sector expertise and in-depth knowledge of air access policies.

Its objective is to advise the government and formulate a long-term strategy designed to balance entry into new markets, national economic interests, and the future of Air Mauritius.

High on the agenda during the discussions was interest expressed by Etihad Airways in launching services to Mauritius.

Initial talks will be opened with a view to establishing a comprehensive project that extends beyond a single new flight route, aiming to deliver broader benefits to the Mauritian economy.

According to the government, the overarching ambition is to enhance the island’s global connections and turn every airline partnership into a development opportunity, generating concrete spin-offs for tourism, businesses, and the local population.
