The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has laid down strict joining conditions for politicians defecting from rival political outfits, specifically targeting members of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), as early preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum.
Party officials state that these new measures aim to prepare the outfit for highly competitive primaries. According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), all party nominations must be finalized by May 9, 2027.
DCP Secretary-General Designate John Methu announced that politicians who actively campaigned for UDA or were physically present during the recent Ol Kalou constituency by-election will face a total ban from joining the party.
The policy follows a decisive victory in the July 16, 2026, Ol Kalou by-election, where DCP candidate Sammy Kamau Ngotho swept the seat with 35,440 votes, leaving UDA’s Samuel Muchina trailing far behind with 5,450 votes. That resounding win significantly solidified DCP’s regional standing and raised the stakes for prospective political allies.
Methu also dismissed any possibilities of direct party tickets for high-profile aspirants expecting special treatment, insisting that every candidate must face the electorate through competitive nominations.
“The nominations will be free and fair. There will be no preferred candidates,” said Methu.
He further clarified that lawmakers who voted to impeach party leader Rigathi Gachagua in October 2024 will not receive any political favors, even though Gachagua publicly forgave them. These politicians must still undergo standard party vetting and nomination procedures, signaling that previous political ties will offer no shortcut to a DCP ticket.
