Windows 11 TPM Errors Explained: Find Your Message and the Right Fix
“Compatible TPM cannot be found,” “TPM device is not ready,” and “TPM has malfunctioned” need different fixes. A TPM warning is frustrating, but its exact message tells you where to start.
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) helps protect encryption keys and sign-in details. Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0. Check what Windows detects, read the TPM status, and match the result to the right step. The tools are built into Windows 11.
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device security. If you see Security processor, open its details and troubleshooting page. Microsoft explains the Device security page and its security processor controls.
A “TPM error” can mean Windows can’t find the TPM, the TPM isn’t ready, or its storage has a problem. An app can also show a TPM sign-in error while Windows still sees the device. The exact wording helps you avoid an unneeded firmware change or TPM clear.
Security processor details and Security processor troubleshooting show TPM details and any message from Windows. “TPM storage is not available. Please clear your TPM” calls for extra care before you act.
The built-in tpm.msc console shows whether Windows detects a TPM. It also shows Status and Specification Version under TPM Manufacturer Information. A TPM with Specification Version 1.2 doesn’t meet Windows 11’s TPM 2.0 rule, even if its status says it’s ready.
Device Manager gives you another way to check TPM detection and device status. On many PCs, Trusted Platform Module 2.0 appears under Security devices. Check the section name, entry name, and Device status on your PC. A missing entry alone doesn’t prove your PC lacks a TPM. A yellow warning icon or a “This device cannot start” status usually points to a driver problem rather than failed hardware — update the driver or check the listed error code before assuming the TPM itself is bad.
You may be able to turn on a supported TPM in your PC’s firmware settings. The option may be called Intel PTT, Intel Platform Trust Technology, AMD fTPM, or AMD PSP fTPM. Names vary, so check your PC maker’s instructions. Microsoft’s TPM 2.0 enabling guidance explains why a capable PC may report that no compatible TPM was found.
The TPM helps protect BitLocker and Windows Hello. A firmware or BIOS update can trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt, so consider suspending BitLocker protection first (Manage BitLocker > Suspend protection) and resuming it once the update finishes — that’s a separate step from clearing the TPM. Clearing the TPM removes the keys and credentials it stores, which can also trigger a BitLocker recovery prompt and require you to set up your Windows Hello PIN again. Find your BitLocker recovery key and confirm you can sign in before either change: check account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey if it saved to your Microsoft account, a printed copy or USB drive if you saved it that way, or ask IT for it on a work or school PC.
Use these checks if you see a Windows 11 compatibility warning, a Security processor alert, or a TPM error in BitLocker or Windows Hello. They’ll help you choose the right error guide, firmware steps, or hardware check.
If BitLocker asks for its recovery key, use your saved key to regain access before changing the TPM or firmware. Look for it at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey, on a printout or USB drive if you saved one, or ask your IT administrator on a work or school PC.
The message and TPM version tell you more than a warning icon. Check Windows Security and tpm.msc, then use this table.
If tpm.msc says “Compatible TPM cannot be found,” check whether your PC maker lists a disabled TPM setting. Turning on Intel PTT or AMD fTPM, when supported, lets Windows use that TPM. A firmware update is a separate step.
Install a firmware update if your PC maker lists one for your model and recommends it for your symptoms. Find your BitLocker recovery key before changing firmware. If your hardware only supports TPM 1.2, a setting can’t turn it into TPM 2.0. Use a TPM 2.0 module only if the motherboard maker lists one for your model. Otherwise, you’ll need a compatible motherboard or Windows 11 PC.
Clearing the TPM resets data held by the security processor. I’d skip this step unless you have a specific instruction, such as “TPM storage is not available. Please clear your TPM.”
First, back up important files and confirm you can access your BitLocker or device-encryption recovery key. Make sure you can sign in with your account password. You may need to set up your Windows Hello PIN again afterward. On a work or school PC, check with IT before you proceed.
If Windows only says your PC “can’t run Windows 11,” check the exact compatibility result. TPM is one of several requirements.
Windows Security, tpm.msc, and Device Manager come with Windows 11 at no extra charge. If you need new hardware, the cost depends on your PC and what its maker supports.
Start with the Windows Security message, then check Status and Specification Version in tpm.msc. Those checks usually point to the right guide or PC maker instructions. Clear the TPM only when the message calls for it and you have your recovery information.

If the warning returns after the matching fix, check your PC maker’s advice for a firmware or hardware fault. If your hardware lacks TPM 2.0 support, consider a compatible PC or motherboard.
