The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns over the illegal movement of banned and unregistered pesticides across Nigeria’s borders.
The agency warned that the circulation of unsafe agrochemicals poses serious threats to public health, food safety and the environment.
NAFDAC said the unauthorised movement and distribution of such products could expose farmers, consumers and other members of the public to harmful chemicals.
The agency also cautioned that the use of prohibited or unregistered pesticides could contaminate food products, soil and water sources, creating risks throughout the food chain.
It stressed the need for stronger border surveillance and enforcement to prevent illegal agrochemicals from entering the Nigerian market.
NAFDAC urged relevant stakeholders, including farmers, agrochemical dealers and distributors, to ensure that pesticides in circulation are duly registered and approved for use in Nigeria.
The agency reiterated the importance of complying with regulations governing the importation, sale and use of pesticides to protect consumers and safeguard the environment.
