
Its mission could shake the foundations of everything we know about the Universe. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is NASA’s latest deep-space powerhouse, and it is already being called a “giant leap forward” in cosmic exploration. Launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, this next-generation observatory isn’t just another telescope, it’s a wide-eyed cosmic cartographer designed to scan the Universe on a scale never attempted before.
Before it became NASA’s newest eye on the Universe, the Roman Space Telescope had a very different origin story. It was originally developed as part of a classified US intelligence program before being repurposed for science after the project was cancelled. Now reborn for discovery rather than surveillance, it carries a price tag of roughly $4 billion and represents one of NASA’s most ambitious astronomy missions to date.
A ‘wide-angle eye’ for the Universe
What sets Roman apart is its extraordinary field of vision. NASA says it can capture panoramic views of space that are about 100 times larger than Hubble and James Webb combined in coverage area per image scale. Think of it as swapping a zoom lens for a cosmic wide-angle camera. This allows Roman to rapidly scan enormous regions of the sky, mapping galaxies, stars, and cosmic structures at a speed no previous space telescope has achieved.
Journey to a million-mile orbit
After launch, the telescope began a 100-day journey toward a gravitational balance point known as Lagrange Point 2, located roughly one million miles (1.6 million km) from Earth. This is the same deep-space neighbourhood where the James Webb Space Telescope operates, far enough to avoid interference from Earth and Moon light, perfect for capturing faint infrared signals from the early Universe.

Hunting dark energy, dark matter, and hidden worlds
At the heart of Roman’s mission is one of science’s biggest mysteries. What makes up most of the Universe? Dark matter acts like an invisible gravitational glue holding galaxies together, while dark energy is the mysterious force driving the Universe’s accelerating expansion. Together, they account for about 95% of everything that exists, yet remain completely unknown. Roman will map billions of galaxies to study how these forces shape the cosmos over time, potentially revealing clues about how the Universe evolved.

The ultimate exoplanet detector
NASA officials believe Roman could uncover tens of thousands, possibly up to 100,000 new exoplanets. Using advanced instruments, including a high-powered Coronagraph, it will study planets orbiting distant stars and even analyze their atmospheres. Building the biggest cosmic map ever made
Over its planned five-year mission (with potential extension to 10), Roman will conduct sweeping sky surveys, creating a vast 3D map of the Universe. Scientists expect it to chart over two billion galaxies, helping them track how cosmic structures formed, evolved, and expanded over billions of years. It may also detect black holes, test gravity at enormous scales, and reveal new insights into the hidden architecture of space-time itself.
NASA officials say Roman combines the strengths of Hubble and James Webb, but with a twist. While Webb peers deep into the distant past with extreme detail, Roman focuses on breadth, scanning vast regions quickly and repeatedly. Together, they form a powerful scientific duo as one zooms in, the other zooms out.
