Former British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced his resignation as a Member of Parliament, saying he will now focus on international affairs, including defence, security, trade and technology.
Starmer made the announcement on Tuesday, saying he would step down as MP for Holborn and St Pancras in London after 11 years in Parliament.
The resignation will trigger a by-election in the constituency.

In a statement shared on social media, Starmer said it was the “right time” for him to leave Parliament and concentrate on issues beyond domestic politics.
“It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” he said.
Starmer’s decision follows his resignation as Labour Party leader and British Prime Minister earlier in the summer after a turbulent two years in office.
The former prime minister, who previously worked as a human rights lawyer, became Labour leader in 2020 and led the party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election.
However, his tenure as prime minister was marked by declining popularity and mounting pressure from members of his own party.
According to the Camden New Journal, Starmer informed the Labour Party of his decision to leave Parliament after serving as an MP for 11 years, including six years as Labour leader.
Andy Burnham subsequently became prime minister in July, taking over from Starmer after his resignation.
Starmer’s departure from Parliament marks the end of an 11-year stint as MP for Holborn and St Pancras and brings his parliamentary career to a close after a period of significant political upheaval in the United Kingdom.
