Gold Fields Foundation Boosts Education Monitoring With GH¢1.54m Vehicle Donation

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has handed over two Toyota Hilux pickup vehicles valued at more than GH¢1.54 million to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen educational supervision and monitoring in the Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley municipalities.

The intervention, according to the Foundation, is intended to address one of the less visible but critical challenges confronting education delivery in mining communities – the ability of education officials to reach schools, teachers and learners, particularly in communities where distance and difficult terrain can impede effective supervision.

The presentation, held at the TNA Stadium, formed part of a broader package of support involving nine motorcycles for institutions responsible for agriculture, cocoa extension and environmental health services in the two municipalities.

Executive Secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, Mr Abdel-Razak Yakubu, said the Foundation viewed the intervention as a practical contribution towards strengthening institutions responsible for educating children and providing essential services to host communities.

He said the Foundation had invested more than US$113 million in education, health, agriculture, water and sanitation, infrastructure and enterprise development, with more than US$16.18 million directed specifically towards educational programmes and initiatives.

Its education interventions, he said, included scholarships, school infrastructure, capacity building, reading programmes and training aimed at improving learning outcomes and creating opportunities for young people.

Mr Yakubu explained that effective implementation of such programmes required strong collaboration with the institutions responsible for education, particularly in areas such as school supervision, teacher and learner engagement, examinations and programme coordination.

He said the two pickups would therefore enable the Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley education directorates to carry out their responsibilities more effectively.

The Foundation also donated nine motorcycles—seven Yamaha YBR 125 and two Apsonic 200G4—to support agricultural extension, cocoa services and environmental health outreach.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Mr Issah Salifu Taylor, described the presentation as more than a ceremony involving vehicles, saying the real value of the intervention lay in the people who would ultimately benefit from improved public services.

He said a vehicle could take an education officer to a school requiring supervision, just as a motorcycle could enable an agricultural extension officer to reach a farmer requiring technical assistance.

“The vehicle is only as valuable as the purpose it serves,” he said, stressing that the intervention could help close the gap between public programmes and the people for whom those programmes were designed.

Mr Taylor, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, commended the Foundation for responding to the needs of the beneficiary institutions.

He also used the occasion to appeal for further collaboration to address deteriorating inner roads in Tarkwa, which he said were affecting residents, businesses and transportation.

Community Relations Superintendent of Gold Fields Ghana, Mr Solomon Ocansey, said the donation represented another step in the company’s commitment to strengthening institutions and supporting development in its host communities.

He expressed appreciation for the continued partnership between Gold Fields and the beneficiary institutions, noting that such collaboration had contributed to the achievements recorded in community development. The western Regional Director of Education, Emmanuel Essuman received the two hilux vehicles on behalf of the two Directorate.

The Foundation said the nine motorcycles, valued at GH¢293,600, would improve the reach of agricultural extension, cocoa health and extension, and environmental health services.

Three motorcycles are going to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in Prestea Huni-Valley, two to Tarkwa Nsuaem, two to the Cocoa Health and Extension Division of COCOBOD in Tarkwa Nsuaem, and one each to the Environmental Health Departments of the two municipalities.

For the education directorates, however, the significance of the two Hilux vehicles may ultimately be measured not by their monetary value but by the number of schools they enable officers to reach, the teachers they are able to support and the children whose learning outcomes can be improved through stronger supervision.

The Foundation said the intervention formed part of its broader objective of creating enduring value in host communities beyond the life of mining.

Its other interventions include the Community Oil Palm Project, Cocoa Farmers Support Programme, scholarships, school and health infrastructure, sustainable water systems, skills development, entrepreneurship and livelihood enhancement programmes.
