ZWANE BOMBSHELL! AmaZulu Coach Reveals Why He Substituted In-Form Striker Thando Ngwenya
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — 26 October 2026 — AmaZulu FC head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why he substituted in-form striker Thando Ngwenya during his side’s narrow 1-0 victory over Kruger United in the Carling Knockout Cup, admitting that the forward failed to make the most of crucial scoring opportunities.
Usuthu secured their place in the next round of the competition after Hendrik Ekstein converted a late penalty at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday. However, despite progressing in the tournament, Zwane was unimpressed with his team’s overall performance and singled out several shortcomings that nearly cost them the match.
Ngwenya, who has been enjoying a positive spell in front of goal, endured a difficult afternoon and was unable to deliver the attacking contribution his coach expected.
Speaking after the encounter, Zwane explained that the striker had two early opportunities to put AmaZulu ahead but reacted too slowly on both occasions.
According to the coach, the forward needed to be sharper and more decisive in front of goal, particularly because scoring early could have changed the complexion of the contest.
“He had about two early in the game,” Zwane explained, highlighting Ngwenya’s delayed reactions as a major concern.
The AmaZulu coach also criticised the striker’s decision-making during a separate attacking situation in which a Kruger United defender managed to beat him for pace.
Zwane insisted that Ngwenya should have used his body more intelligently to protect possession and put the ball on the opposite side of the approaching defender.
For the coach, these were opportunities that an experienced striker needed to convert into meaningful attacking situations, whether through a shot, a chance created for a teammate or a foul won in a dangerous area.
Zwane further revealed that Ngwenya’s struggles affected AmaZulu’s ability to build attacks and take advantage of spaces left open by their opponents.
“He was not himself today. He was losing the ball cheaply,” the coach said, explaining that the team struggled to retain possession and bring supporting players into attacking positions.
The coach was particularly frustrated by a 15-minute spell in the first half when AmaZulu had enough opportunities to establish a commanding advantage but failed to capitalise.
“There was a moment of fifteen minutes where we could have scored three goals, and now Thando was letting us down,” Zwane added.
Nevertheless, Zwane was careful not to place the entire blame on Ngwenya, acknowledging that several players struggled to perform at their usual level.
He described the team’s overall reactions as sluggish but praised the defensive unit for remaining organised and protecting the result.
Ultimately, AmaZulu advanced thanks to Ekstein’s decisive penalty, but Zwane’s assessment suggests that significant improvements will be required in their attacking play.
For Ngwenya, the challenge will be to respond positively, rediscover his sharpness and turn future opportunities into goals as Usuthu continue their Carling Knockout campaign.
