Why Murkomen’s Facemask at Eastleigh Collapse Scene Has Kenyans Talking

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen sparked widespread discussion after visiting the scene of a building collapse in Eastleigh, Nairobi, wearing a facemask as emergency teams continued searching for people trapped beneath the debris.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, drawing the attention of government officials, rescue workers and members of the public. As efforts continued to locate possible survivors, Murkomen’s appearance at the site attracted attention, particularly because of the mask covering his face.

Although his presence was connected to the unfolding emergency, Kenyans on social media focused on his choice of protective covering, with several users sharing questions, humorous remarks and different interpretations of his appearance.

The discussion gained momentum after NTV Kenya shared a post about the incident. Its comment section quickly filled with reactions from people curious about why the Cabinet Secretary had worn the facemask during his visit.

One social media user, Oswana Nelson, questioned whether the mask was specifically intended for the site inspection. Another commenter, Florence Kamande, suggested that it might have been related to oxygen, although no confirmed explanation was provided.

Other users approached the situation with humour. Nicz Mtetezi jokingly suggested that Murkomen was covering his teeth, while Joel Njuguna also made a humorous observation about the official’s appearance.

Bonnie Jnr, however, directed attention towards the broader issue of building safety, commenting on the dangers of shortcuts and their potential consequences for human lives.

Despite the online jokes and speculation, the circumstances surrounding the building collapse remained the more pressing concern, particularly for families anxiously awaiting information about relatives who might have been trapped inside.

Rescue teams continued working under difficult conditions to search through the rubble and reach anyone who could still be alive. The operation required careful coordination, as responders had to remove debris while minimising the risk of further harm to potential survivors.

The tragedy has also renewed public attention on construction safety and the importance of ensuring that buildings meet the required standards. Questions surrounding possible negligence and the circumstances that led to the collapse remain significant as authorities respond to the incident.

Meanwhile, Murkomen’s facemask continued to generate online reactions. However, the comments circulating on social media do not establish why he wore it, and no verified explanation was included in the report shared by NTV Kenya.

For now, public attention remains divided between the Cabinet Secretary’s appearance and the ongoing rescue efforts, as families hope for positive news from the collapsed building site.
