Sharks Welcome Springboks Back for Mammoth Leinster Battle at Kings Park
The Sharks face one of their toughest challenges of the United Rugby Championship season when they welcome Leinster to Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday evening.
The Durban side will know that their visitors are likely to arrive determined to respond after suffering a narrow one-point defeat last weekend. Leinster have established themselves among the competition’s leading sides in recent seasons and will be looking to quickly rebuild momentum.
Kick-off is scheduled for 18:30 South African time.
Springbok Returns Strengthen the Sharks
The Sharks have received a significant boost ahead of the contest with several Springboks returning to the squad.
Andre Esterhuizen, Eben Etzebeth, Edwill van der Merwe, Thomas du Toit and Ethan Hooker are all back in the match-day group, providing the Durban outfit with additional international experience.
Esterhuizen will captain the Sharks from inside centre, while Etzebeth starts on the replacements bench.
Leinster Present a Different Challenge
The Sharks opened their campaign against the Ospreys, but Saturday’s opponents represent a substantially different test.
Leinster’s depth, consistency and recent record in the URC mean the Sharks will need to maintain their intensity throughout the contest if they are to secure another important result.
For the hosts, victory would also provide valuable momentum ahead of another major challenge next weekend when they travel to Cape Town to face the Stormers.
Durban Record Adds Another Layer
Leinster’s recent record on South African soil provides an additional storyline heading into the match.
The Irish province have won only once in their last nine visits to South Africa, although that victory came in Durban last season.
The Sharks will therefore be hoping to use home advantage to make life difficult for the visitors, with the passionate Kings Park crowd and Durban’s warm, humid conditions potentially adding to the challenge facing Leinster.
Leinster Looking to Climb the Table
Despite their narrow opening-round defeat, Leinster remain one of the teams expected to challenge near the top of the URC standings.
The visitors will be eager to avoid another setback and begin moving up the table, while the Sharks will have their own ambitions of remaining among the early contenders.
That combination should ensure both sides enter the contest with plenty at stake.
Sharks Starting XV
The Sharks will field Luan Giliomee at full-back, with Edwill van der Merwe, Jurenzo Julius, Andre Esterhuizen and Lili Bester forming the backline around fly-half Vusi Moyo and scrum-half Jaden Hendrikse.
Nick Hatton starts at No. 8, with Manu Tshituka and Phepsi Buthelezi completing the loose trio.
Darrien Landsberg and Jason Jenkins form the second row, while Vincent Koch, Esethu Mnebelele and Thomas du Toit make up the starting front row.
