GFA must accept responsibility for Black Stars’ failures – Kudjoe Fianoo

Former chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Kudjoe Fianoo, has called for accountability within Ghana football, arguing that those responsible for the Black Stars’ performances must answer for the team’s results.

Ghana currently sit at the bottom of Group C with no points after failing to win their first two games of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after losing 2-0 to Ivory Coast before a 4-2 home loss against The Gambia.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Fianoo questioned the decisions behind the team’s technical setup, insisting that officials should not take credit when things go well without accepting responsibility when results fall short of expectations.

The veteran football administrator further said losing a competition was understandable if a team had given its best, but raised concerns about the manner in which Ghana approached tournaments.

“You can lose a competition or a tournament, and everybody would say you’ve done your best. But the way you go into a tournament and you know we won’t even win one match,” he said.

Fianoo also questioned the procedures used to assemble the Black Stars’ technical team, arguing that coaching appointments involve assessments and decisions beyond the coach alone.

“Who put together the technical team? I don’t think any coach will just come and say, ‘I want to coach the Black Stars,’ and the Black Stars will be given to him. Assessments are done,” he stated.

He added that officials involved in those decisions should also be held responsible for the outcomes.

“And you take all the credit when things go right,” Fianoo said.

He also argued that Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would raise serious questions about the direction of the national team and football administration.

“I’m not saying that GFA should be dissolved just by speculation or some flimsy [reasons]. But for the Black Stars to even fail to qualify for AFCON, I don’t think there is any worse performance than that,” he said.

Fianoo further warned that the focus on the senior national team should not overshadow problems across the wider football structure.

“The Black Stars are the flagship. But from the ground to the top, things are not working,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has confirmed that an interim technical team will take charge of the Black Stars for their two-legged 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying tie against Somalia in November, while also extending the deadline for applications for the vacant head coach position to October 15, 2026.
