The New Patriotic Party (NPP) heads into its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, with considerable attention fixed on a contest that has emerged as one of the most closely watched races for the party’s national chairmanship.
At the centre of the contest are former Energy Minister, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko and former General Secretary, John Boadu, alongside former National Chairman Paul Afoko, as well as former Greater Accra Regional Chairman Sammy Crabbe.
The chairmanship race has increasingly been viewed as a contest between Agyarko and Boadu, although the available surveys do not point to a single uniform outcome.
A September 30 Global InfoAnalytics poll placed John Boadu at 48 per cent, ahead of Agyarko at 38 per cent, with Afoko on 12 per cent and Sammy Crabbe on two per cent.
Another survey by Professor Smart Sarpong of Kumasi Technical University covering 9,882 respondents similarly put Boadu ahead, including NPP delegates.
In yet another poll, a group of lecturers from the University of Ghana predicted a 60.7% victory for Boakye Agyarko.
Ghana Watch Initiative International had earlier predicted a 51.81% win for the former Energy Minister.
The polling picture, however, is only one part of the equation. The election will be determined by the party’s Electoral College, bringing the focus back to the delegates, their local networks and the strength of the campaigns on the ground.
With the race narrowing into a two-horse contest in much of the political conversation, both candidates have sought to present themselves as capable of helping rebuild and reorganise a party still adjusting to its return to opposition.
Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko
For Agyarko, the campaign has been built around his experience in government, political pedigree and a message centred on renewal and repositioning the party.
Boakye Agyarko, who is tipped as the best candidate to lead the NPP as chairman in 24 hours to the election, is asking delegates to vote for him.
In a text message to party delegates, Boakye Agyarko said: “ELECT ME CHAIRMAN. LET’S WIN THE PRESIDENCY AND RESTORE OUR MAJORITY IN 2028”.
He continued: “the tour is over. The work begins. You have spoken and I have listened. We share one mission: a united NPP, Bawumia as President and a restored parliamentary majority in 2028.Elect me National Chairman tomorrow and together we will turn that mission into victory”.”
John Boadu, on the other hand, enters the contest with extensive experience within the NPP’s organisational structure. His previous service as General Secretary gives him familiarity with the party’s machinery and constituency structures.
That organisational experience could become significant in a delegate election where relationships built over years can matter as much as public campaigning.
Beyond the chairmanship, the conference will produce a new leadership team across nine national officer positions, with contests for General Secretary, National Organiser, Women’s Organiser, Youth Organiser, Nasara Organiser, Treasurer, Communications Director and three Vice-Chairperson positions.
The General Secretary contest has Justin Kodua Frimpong seeking another term against Eugene Boakye Antwi, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena.
The National Organiser’s race has also attracted substantial attention, with Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, Salam Mustapha and other contenders competing for a position central to the party’s grassroots mobilisation.
Among the women, former Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson is contesting the Women’s Organiser position against Perpetual Ekua LomokieAkwada and Safia Mohammed.
A recent survey placed Hawa Koomson ahead among respondents and delegates, although the election itself remains to be decided by the relevant delegates.
Ultimately, Saturday’s conference will be less about opinion polls and more about the ballots cast by delegates.
For Agyarko and Boadu, the chairmanship contest offers a direct test of their respective political networks, organisational reach and appeal within the party.
For the NPP as a whole, the outcome will shape the leadership structure expected to oversee its reorganisation and preparations for the next electoral cycle.
The real verdict, therefore, will come not from the surveys, but from the delegates assembled in Kumasi.
