At least five civilians have been killed and 47 injured after drones operated by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck a student dormitory at Kordofan University in the city of El-Obeid, the Sudan Doctors Network said.
The independent medical group said in a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj that the casualties were recorded after the strike on Thursday.
It accused the RSF of continuing to target civilians and civilian infrastructure across Sudan, and said the attack on student accommodation and educational facilities amounts to a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
The group warned that the incident highlights a “worrying escalation” in attacks on civilian and public-service facilities.
It urged the United Nations and international humanitarian and human rights organisations to condemn attacks on civilian infrastructure, ensure those responsible are held accountable and support an urgent medical response for those injured and affected.
The RSF could not immediately be reached for comment.
El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, has come under repeated drone attacks in recent months.
On 20 September, the Sudan Doctors Network reported that two people were killed and 20 others injured when RSF drones struck several residential areas in the city.
Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army and the RSF. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, creating one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises.
