Tech news platform Rest of World to shut down in January 2027 following a collapse in search traffic

Rest of World, the nonprofit newsroom covering technology outside the West (Africa, Asia and South America), will cease operation as an independent body by the end of January 2027. The media company is now seeking financial backing after its search and social referral traffic fell sharply in the past 18 months.

Rumours about the shutdown of the six-year-old company first broke on Sunday night, signalling concerns for readers and mostly freelance Journalists whose stories have been approved by the company. This development comes after a $60 million initial capital.

However, in a LinkedIn post on Monday, Rina Chandran, Deputy Editor at Rest of World, confirmed the report. She noted that the company’s leadership team is currently searching for a new home that is expected to financially back the company, which has stayed independent for the past 72 months.

“Yes, it’s true: Rest of World is shutting down,” she said in the post.

Unknown when the media company will come back on air once it closes down by January 2027, Chandran tagged working with freelancers, columnists, reporters and editors as one of the best moments in her career.

“It has been my great privilege to be a part of this journey, first in Bangkok as Southeast Asia editor, and then in San Francisco as a deputy editor writing about how tech that’s built in Silicon Valley affects the rest of the world,” she added.

For now, Rest of World said freelancers and columnists whose stories have already been commissioned will be preserved and continue to be accessible. It’s unclear whether the company will commission any stories for now since it’s about three months until January 2027.

“To all of you, and to our many donors and supporters, thank you for being a part of Rest of World,” Chandran added.

Rest of World

Founded in 2020, Rest of World set out to challenge the Western-centric focus of technology journalism. Schmidt, daughter of former Google chief executive officer Eric Schmidt, committed $60 million to the project, which she tagged as her life’s project.

Rest of World reported from over 100 countries, worked with more than 400 freelancers, and reported stories that prompted global policy change outside the West.

Rest of World bows out of Independent Journalism

As an independent company, Rest of World depends on philanthropic capital, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and reader donations to finance its operations. Owing to this business model, the sharp drop in reader traffic made the standalone model unsustainable, prompting its leadership to look for a larger institution to absorb the brand.

In addition, the Rest of World’s collapse as an independent body is attributed to algorithm repositioning. Tech giants such as Meta have intentionally deprioritised news links on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, shifting their algorithmic measure and focus to video and creator content.

The company is also caught in the web of superintelligence. The rapid rise of AI chatbots and smart search engines such as Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT, which increasingly summarise article content directly on the search page, has reduced users’ visits to Rest of World. With AI chatbots, readers don’t need to click through to the original publisher’s website before getting the summary of a story.

Rest of World’s sudden shift from its foundational focus on independent journalism shows how standalone media organisations are facing a test of survival amid the continued advancement of digital content distribution. While algorithms continue to rechannel what online users see and read first, nonprofit newsrooms built on global reporting rather than user subscriptions are under intense pressure.
