BEDC Strike: Power shutdown threatens economic activities

BENIN CITY: Electricity supply disruptions triggered by the industrial action of workers of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) are raising concerns over the economic cost of unreliable power, with businesses, manufacturers and other electricity-dependent enterprises facing potential losses.

The shutdown of BEDC facilities by members of the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Monday disrupted electricity supply across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states, Vanguard reports.

Beyond the immediate inconvenience to electricity consumers, the strike underscores the heavy economic consequences of prolonged power interruptions in a country where businesses already contend with high operating costs, rising energy expenses and an uncertain investment climate.

Small and medium-scale enterprises, including manufacturing outfits, cold-room operators, food vendors, hotels, bakeries and other service providers, are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in electricity supply. Many depend on uninterrupted power to preserve goods, operate machinery, deliver services and maintain production schedules.

For such businesses, a prolonged blackout could mean increased expenditure on petrol and diesel to power generators, reduced output, delayed deliveries, spoilage of perishable goods and diminished profit margins. The additional cost of alternative power sources could also translate into higher prices for goods and services, further placing pressure on consumers already grappling with the high cost of living.

The industrial action also raises concerns about productivity, commercial transactions and investor confidence, particularly where businesses are unable to meet contractual obligations or sustain operations during extended outages.

The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has backed the workers’ action, citing unresolved issues bordering on salary harmonisation, minimum wage implementation, promotions and alleged threats of job cuts.

The labour body urged BEDC management to return to the negotiating table and address the workers’ grievances to facilitate an early resolution of the dispute and restore normal electricity supply.

Reports indicate that management and union representatives were meeting over the dispute, while a senior BEDC employee disclosed that workers’ emoluments had recently been reviewed.

While the workers’ grievances centre on conditions of service and welfare, the economic implications of the strike extend beyond the immediate dispute between labour and management. The interruption of electricity supply threatens the capacity of businesses to operate efficiently, sustain employment and contribute to economic growth.

A swift and lasting resolution of the dispute is therefore imperative, not only to restore power supply but also to protect businesses, minimise economic losses and prevent further disruption to commercial activities.
