Kindiki Sends Warning to Those Nominating Kenyans for 2026 State Honours
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has directed all nominating bodies, organizations, and individuals submitting candidates for the 2026 National Honours to follow strict criteria and rigorous vetting procedures to safeguard the integrity of the process.
Kindiki issued the directive on Wednesday, October 28, following a detailed briefing by the National Honours Committee regarding the evaluation of potential awardees. He noted that nominees must meet rigorous benchmark standards and demonstrate exceptional merit to merit state recognition.
“I directed nominating agencies, organisations and individuals to adhere to strict criteria and vetting to ensure only the most deserving and extraordinary get to be nominated,” he said.
The briefing brought together key stakeholders from across government branches and public services, including representatives from national and county governments, the judiciary, Parliament, the public service, and security and defense forces.
National Honours represent awards conferred by the President on behalf of the people and the Republic of Kenya. These presidential awards recognize outstanding public service, extraordinary achievements, bravery, patriotism, leadership, and significant national contributions.
While the president may confer awards at his discretion, the state traditionally presents National Honors during official state celebrations, most notably Jamhuri Day on December 12.
Kenya’s highest state commendation is the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya, structured into three distinct classes: Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (CGH), Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), and Moran of the Order of the Golden Heart (MGH).
Similarly, the Order of the Burning Spear, awarded for distinguished service and extraordinary achievement, comprises three levels: Chief (CBS), Elder (EBS), and Moran (MBS).
Additional categories include the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya, which acknowledges distinguished public service, and the Head of State’s Commendation, featuring separate civilian and military divisions.
Kenya also confers several specialized decorations and service medals, including the Distinguished Conduct Order (DCO), the Silver Star of Kenya (SS), the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM), the Uhodari Medal, and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
