Judicial officer charged with threatening to kill

Mahalapye Magistrate Kedirileng Venetia Moruakgomo appeared before the Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court this week, facing a charge of threatening to kill two people.

According to the charge sheet, Moruakgomo, 40, is charged with threatening to kill, contrary to Section 220 of the Penal Code (Cap. 08:01) of the laws of Botswana.

The charge alleges that, on or about October 11, 2026, at or near Flowertown in Mahalapye, Moruakgomo, without lawful excuse, indirectly threatened to kill Tshoganetso Atlamelang and Lebogang Kebeetsweng.

The alleged threat was reportedly communicated through a WhatsApp message sent from a cellphone to Lentlhabetse Willie.

The message, as reproduced in the charge sheet, allegedly read: “I am looking for a gun to kill Atlamelang and kill myself. There will be three bodies by the end of today,” or words to that effect.

The charge sheet does not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged message or the relationship between the accused and the two people named in the charge.

Following her appearance in court, Moruakgomo was referred to Sbrana Psychiatric Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. She remains in custody.

The referral is intended to facilitate an assessment of her psychiatric condition. No findings from the evaluation were available at the time of publication.

The case places a judicial officer before the courts, where she faces a criminal allegation that will be determined through the judicial process.

The charge remains an allegation, and Moruakgomo is presumed innocent unless and until she is proven guilty by a competent court.

Further details regarding her next court appearance and the outcome of the psychiatric evaluation were not immediately available.

Should the matter proceed to trial, the prosecution will be required to prove the charge in accordance with the law.
